Re: Success!

They're judging who wins based on how many people read each story? That's kind of arbitrary. Well, I'm glad I didn't click on the other story and read it, too, since apparently my click was a vote. Strange to have people vote for something before they even know what's in it. (Your story was really l...

Re: Animated images

I like images. I like animated gifs. I liked coloured font but gave that up. I'm glad there is an easy fix to avoiding gifs ... because limiting free speech or others' options to self-expression is a fix, born of principle, that does not weigh easy upon me, personally speaking. http://www.carolynjo...

Re: Animated images

Indeed! Thanks, HL. Great suggestion. Everyone happy. Yay. ETA: Wait, I already had Flash animations turned off. Looks like the only other options are to not display icons/avatars at all? Hmmm. Will snuffle more. ETA2: Yep, looks like my only other choices are to stop displaying images altogether. I...

Animated images

I'm just throwing this out here -- I'm fully aware I may be part of a very small minority, in which case, I happily bow to the majority desire. Animated gifs drive me batty. While that includes jumping, clapping, shooting, saluting or otherwise mobile smilies, I've managed to live with those since t...

I'll be ready to swap in a month (end of August). Whether I'm at your level I'll leave you to decide (and no hard feelings if you decide I'm not). Here's a story of mine you can read online to help you decide.

Re: Success!

Ah, one of the Big Three. Gotcha. That didn't seem obscure enough for a "too obscure" comment. Then again, the STNG episode (which is one of my favorites) didn't seem to have anything at all to do with the current topic... which, ah, makes it obscure. See? wotf022

I also don't get holding a story for almost a year, or frankly for more than a month after reading it. If it isnt a yes after a month mulling it, that seems to me an argument that it's a no.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Huh...my name's not on the HM list. Just e-mailed Joni about it. Turns out I didn't e-mail her back after receiving the results e-mail from her, and she assumes people she doesn't hear back from don't want to be listed on the blog. That's all fixed now. :-) So heads up, all: do be sure to respond t...

Critique Request: partial story, now 15K words

I have a fantasy story that's at 15,000 words and not nearly finished. The problem I'm up against is that I see two or three ways to take the story, and I keep waffling and second-guessing what I've already got. I like what I've got, but I can't assess whether it works from my nose-against-the-page ...

Re: Five Minute Rant

Tina, I don't think they'll notice. They'll be too busy looking at the part that says your a WotF winer. Too subtle? Well, after the kill-you-with-the-passage-of-time saga that is Q1 and the warhammer of unexpected doom that is Q2 for many of us, I can unequivocally say I am a WOTF winer now, too. ...

Commiserations to Holly, Jeremy, Sean, Chris and especially Martin (whom I know best). I know it must be a huge letdown not to win. On the bright side, it's all but certain you'll be in the finalist pool again soon. Kary and I will be over shortly with a massive chest of +3 Brownies of Consolation a...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Major congratulations to the winners! Woo hoo!

This Q has the usual number of HMs, but those were largely dealt out by KD. Semis have numbered 10 since I've been entering, so that's a definite cut. Wonder if it's a permanent change, or if that # has now become variable, like HMs.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I doubt it means DF "hated" our stories. Probably he just read through the hold pile to select the finalists, and because the rest of the contest was so far behind, he just gave all the others a form rejection in order to move on more quickly to the other quarters. To be honest, I would b...

Re: Dave Wolverton's 10 reasons why he rejects a story

Well, I hope DF isn't really attached to character descriptions (hands, feet, ears....really?). I dislike character descriptions, myself, when I read. Hearing about the MC's hair color or length or freckles or whatever usually detracts from my reading pleasure. Now, if a character has some physical ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

There have been a few quarters where one of the finalists didn't hear his/her status from Joni -- Adam Perin was serving overseas, IIRC, and didn't hear he was a *winner* until announcements were made. Also, IIRC, Nick Tchan heard about his first finalist placement from a source other than Joni. I i...
