Re: Goals four V.38!

I read The Wallet and Maudie. Interesting. There's two POVs, possibly each author wrote one, but I couldn't tell. Not sure this would place today. Not because the story was bad, but there's a sort of drift to it. Character growth was minimal, and one character was the inanimate wallet (even though t...

Re: Goals four V.38!

^^ wow. From the volume: As has happened once before (see WOTF II), a collaborative team has won a Contest prize. It is in face a First Prize, for a story which was written electronically by passing it back and forth between California and Texas via modem. The authors had met only on a computer netw...

Re: Goals four V.38!

I may have posted this elsewhere, but to make it official... My goals four 38: Submit a co-authored story all four quarters. Since I've never actually done a four-fer, I figure this may be the best way to accomplish that. Now I just need four people to put up with me over the course of one story and...

Re: Goals four V.38!

Agathon, That sounds totally do-able. Do you keep track online or in excel or whatnot? I have a giant excel sheet going back to my first submission. I also keep track on the Grinder, but that's my backup and search engine. Some also have a bingo card. I have one, but stopped submitting, so the only ...

Re: Short stories that are obviously part of a larger narrative?

Not sure the judges would know exactly. Unless it ends with riders heading for their next adventure, etc. However, there have been several winners who sent in first chapters, etc. and changed the ending to have a denouement, then opened it back up for the novel. Here's a quote from Dr. Jest from ano...

Re: courier versus courier new versus all the other courier fonts

There's another topic you may find helpful as well: http://forum.writersofthefuture.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7964 I like that this one asks us what we use. I have a formatted WotF template that I use to start all new stories. It's got all the settings ready to go. Courier 12 double spaced. I've g...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 38

Thanks Retro. I'm not in 3 and I have low hopes for 4, but there's always V.38! I'm going for four. My biggest issue is infrequent entries. Talk to Wulf about entering every quarter... till ya win. I don't play an instrument. I'm one non-talented mo-fo. I've learned it's all about the process. Gotta...

Goals four V.38!

A few years ago I posted a 4 in 35 thread that seemed to motivate folks to write/submit four stories in one WotF calendar year. Well, here's the sequel, Goals for 38! With a caveat: Results are out of our control. So when I write of results as a goal, I mean it in a more abstract, gotta be in it to ...

Re: Contest rules questions

Aah, that's an angle I hadn't thought of. While it may technically not have reached any threshold for a pro sale or 5000 hits or whatever, imagine if a judge saw it and you got DQ'd AFTER reaching finalist. Ugh.

No title. No details (It's about a guy who is depressed and drinks beer until he gains 60 lbs).

I ask like this: Wordcount 5400 (Because there are going to be loads of stories around that #, and this doesn't break anonymity.)
And style: Fantasy, Sci-Fi etc.

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Welcome & Välkommen! Very few people go through the WotF crucible without a rejection, so it's all good. I get the near and dear story. That was my first because it was the only one I wrote in complete isolation. I had no idea how I'd do. I printed it up, mailed it in, and got an HM. I framed th...

Re: The hyphen, the en dash, and the em dash...please help!

I always use a space - otherwise it looks like a hyphenated word. Or maybe it's because I'm incorrectly using a hyphen. Either way I'm a reluctant user. Maybe because I'm using it incorrectly. :)

Re: Any Mystery/Who-done-it Winners?

Oh. It's good. (Duh. It won.). It definitely focuses more on the MCs than does mine. Their personal story is hung around the crime as opposed to the story being mainly about the crime and its resolution. Exactly. In both our stories, at least that I could detect, the plot drove it and the character...

Just peeked again at In Apprehension How Like A God (V. 27 Golden Pen Winner). First paragraph - mentions of bodies. MC is a detective. Penultimate paragraph, the MC resigns and goes on a "sleeper mission to the stars". You and I both wrote detective stories that take place on a ship, we b...
