One of V37's winners is, in fact, not going to be 18 yet when we get to the gala in September! Youngest winner in contest history.

So... the question is, were they born before or after I started entering the contest? wotf019

Re: Have WOTF thought of this?

Indeed, we have 3 "Starlight" anthologies. We talked to Joni about this before publishing the first one. These are "unofficial" but with permission, if that makes sense. I'm hoping that if I win I can bring the paperbacks to Galaxy Press and put them on a bookshelf somewhere. 1. ...

Re: 7 point help needed

I think some of it is that if I'm reading something good I just read, otherwise my inner editor comes out and I start analysing instead. It's testament to how good those two particular stories are that the editor stayed in his box lol Exactly why a non TF story can win! Me, I didn't get past page 2...

Re: 7 point help needed

Not every story will have a perfect set of TF cycles. Some stories will win without them because they are undeniable as is. Generally, the TFs are "rising action and stakes". Maddy Dune's One and Only Spelling Bee is a good twist on TF. She tries and succeeds - and things get worse. But in...

Re: Music to write by

Ooh, soundtracks are great. Conan, yes! But Amazon removed it... However, if you ask Alexa to play it, she plays similar music and there's stuff to be discovered that way as well. I listened to Two Steps from Hell this morning. Very nice. I recognized one of the songs and wondered where I'd heard it...

Music to write by

This has come up in the past, but I'd like to ask again. What music do y'all write by? One of my current issues is that I tend to listen to music while I work. So maybe 5-6 hours a day (I work more, but also listen to podcasts, etc). Thus it's more difficult to find writing-only music. (I do finally...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

Received my SF crit today. The story is a memory transfer story - known as a frequent story type submission. Dave suggested I up the game in that genre to say something new. This goes to the fantasy discussion in the V.38 Q2 thread. Imagine how many fantasy stories Dave has seen. Bring something new...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 38

From what I understand, Dave generally chooses one story from each genre as finalists. In my first SF critique he said he had three great "space" stories and had to choose one from the three. Fantasy is pretty broad, so there's probably one classic sword/magic story as a finalist, but then...

The majority of the non-winning finalists I've read over the years have been fantasy.

I agree with Wulf: write what you love, or what inspires this quarter, and then on to the next quarter.

And I'm in for Q2--probably the earliest entry I've put in, but I wanted to tie this off this month to ease the pressure on myself a little bit. Totally jealous. It's not a winner, but I'll offer my SHM that I edited to my SF. Up to you. BAM! Dustin Bam-Bam Adams does it again. (I can only think of you as Bam-Bam since your earlier post.) I was Bam-Bam for Halloween when I was five. Had a little plastic club and everything. I could be Bam-Bam. Or Emeril.

Re: Average WOTF story word count?

I think we should listen to Gandalf. A story is precisely as long as it needs to be. ;)

That said, I try my hardest not to go over 10k. I think the odds go down under 3k and over 10k.
And I like to play the odds.

Hope you don't mind if I answer this as well, with my opinion.

To stay current, I'd work backwards in volumes with what Dave has selected going back to Dave's first volume from his second run. Volume 29.

Re: How many words do you write in an hour on average?

Agreed. And it's about your own expectations. I'd love to write more, have more words, etc. At this point, I've set a goal of 500 words a day. If I do this, by the end of the month of January I'll have more than all of last year. But each hour? I dunno. Again, expectations. I've been clocked at 100 ...

Eolake Stobblehouse, a published finalist in v5 has a 182 word story, -Just don't-. Not a winner, but I'm sure he got the same treatment. That's the book with K.D. Wentworth's story Daddy's Girls. She won 3rd place and ascended from there. I found a copy of the anthology at a thrift store that has ...

I have to agree with Liz about hearing it aloud. I'm pretty good about reading aloud in my head (did that make sense?). But I still do a final read-aloud with every story (in a different font than writing). That said (haha), I believe "that" is more often properly in a sentence than it pro...

After you submit, I believe there's a button that asks if you want to print.
I did that, then when the print window came up, I clicked the dropdown for PDF.
A 2 page PDF appeared with all my info downloaded.
Handy.

(Although it could be an option because I pay Adobe monthly for PDF services...)
