Re: Am I doing submissions backwards?

If the goal is to just to get some kind of sale as quickly as possible, I think instead of worrying about the relative hardness or softness of each market, the best strategy would be: 1) submit to the fastest turnaround markets first. You get more chances for a sale in the shortest amount of time. T...

Re: Short story markets

I try to eventually send each story to most of the markets that pay pro rates (5 cents a word), but various factors affect which markets I send to first, such as: whether they liked my previous stuff, prestige, whether the market routinely gets reviewed in Locus, turnaround times, pay, convenience (...

Just a note for those having trouble finding exchange partners - for another possibility for finding feedback on your story you might look at Baen's Bar. The guidelines are a little outdated but provide the gist of it and can be found here: http://www.grantvillegazette.com/Universe_Annex_Submissions...

I like this last one the best so far, but I think it could maybe use a more decorative pentagram. This one seems kind of plain and benign, and it made me look twice to make sure it wasn't a star of David.

Re: Good Places to Submit Stories

Monty, was that your first submission to Penumbra or had they heard from you before? I ask because, as noted elsewhere, I have stopped receiving any of their first round in / out messages, with which I had become familiar. This happened after I sent them a query to which they did not respond and I'...

You can also use the search function at The (Submission) Grinder to find markets too. Some additions to Annie's list that I have submitted to include: Penumbra Waylines Magazine Grantville Gazette: Universe Annex I personally did have some problems with Penumbra, but it looks like many people here s...

Thoughts on $5 Covers?

Any thoughts on these covers? Do either of them work? Does one work better than the other? I commissioned these off Fiverr for $5 each. I just described the story generally and listed some of the elements present in the story (e.g. a starship, nuclear explosions, etc...), but I told the artist I did...

According to the Rejection Wiki (http://www.rejectionwiki.com/index.php? ... d_Magazine),
"didn't quite work for me" is a lower tier rejection at Lightspeed. That's all I have personally seen from them.

I think some people have used the Word to HTML converter here: http://www.vocshop.com/rick/barpost.html But I have always run into problems when I tried to do full stories rather than just snippets, and I have had varying success with other converters. Some people are pretty good at getting their st...

I like "Contact" better. I think it better portrays the part of the story about being stranded on a island.

I think the stars on "Sector" can help give a sci-fi vibe, but the mountain-thing just looks odd to me.

Re: Third Way Publishing

I'm totally a noob at all this and would be interested in everybody's input and thoughts, but from what I gather the typical process in traditional publishing goes something like this: Once you finished your first novel and run the gauntlet of query letters, finding agents, sitting in slush piles, n...

Whether it's PDF or traditional printing, SOMEone has to pay the print bill before the copies get shipped to the stores. There seems to be an assumption that POD costs no more than e-pubbing, and it just ain't so. Mike The assumption is that for THE WRITER, the cost and convenience isn't too much d...

One of the main POD companies now is Createspace. An Amazon company. It's getting pretty big. An author can setup up their titles, and anytime anyone wishes to order a copy, the retailer (Amazon or whoever) and Createspace handle all the billing and order fulfillment at no out of pocket expense to t...

Re: Penumbra Submissions

It doesn't look like Penumbra will be a SFWA qualifying market any time soon: http://www.annleckie.com/2013/06/10/people-die-of-exposure/ It looks like their not paying pro-rates for the "Rising Talent" story each issue disqualifies them, so they apparently have lost their 'year of complia...

Rebecca, There was a brief instance as I scrolled down the screen that I saw the cover image without the title, and my first impulse was that I have no idea what that image is. I guess it doesn't really matter now, but I do think there was more value in those older threads than what you gave them credit for. I've also set up some auto-pruning to get rid of threads that have been dead for longer than a year. I just noticed the part about deleting the older threads and saw that most everything prior to 2011 is gone. Is that all permamently gone? I think some of those older threads still maybe had interes...
