Re: Five Minute Rant
Another rant. At myself, this time. I've been struggling with this story since January. I knew the very broad outlines the whole time, and I always knew the nature of the climax. But I didn't know the details, so I did research. And I kept getting interrupted by other work. (Darned goats!) A month ...

Re: Total Recall Remake
The one thing I never understood, and still don't, is that Dick is unclear as to the nature of the memory experience. Are the people JUST given the memory or are they given a memory AND the experience? And by 'experience' I mean something like a vivid hallucinogenic real time story-type-thingy. In t...

Re: Five Minute Rant
Hmm... I'd like to do a rant about writers who seek instant gratification and can't figure out why they're not published after two months of trying... but that might be inappropriate (dealing with someone like this on another forum--ugh). Nice. People just have to know it'll take time to get publis...

Re: Five Minute Rant
A story I sent to "Dark Wisdom" has been out for over 2 months now. I am beginning to wonder if the magazine is defunct. I say this since I submitted a story to them the first day of their reading period. And their title page has old information. But SFWA still has them listed as a qualify...

ROFL! Touche, madame. Then again, mutually assured destruction much? And with that we return you to your regularly scheduled ranting. Here's mine. Dagnabit! I'm here to rant that I can't even RANT about rejections if these people won't return my subs! So that means this rant is about waiting. I hat...

Look, I don't want to make enemies on here. And I sure don't want to torpedo my writing career before it even started. I like you all. And many, if not most of you have experiences I can learn from. I was just looking to rant.
Peace?

Re: Five Minute Rant
Just so we are clear and so I don't come out as the bad guy, here is the context of my statements: "I get hundreds of stories each month, I can't give personal feedback on all of them." I was responding to THIS claim from editors. Now, if there are other reasons, fine. I can live with that...

As a teacher, your primary responsibility is to teach your students. You are a service provider, and the students are your customers. (Well . . . technically, the parents of the students are your customers.) My point being the excuse that they don't have the time. I understand who the customer base...

Science Fiction Story, Around 9,000 words
Hey folks,
I am about 3/4 done with a very rough draft of a story for Q3. If anyone wants to exchange stories when I am finished, let me know. I'll look at either science fiction or fantasy of pretty much any length (nothing beyond 17,000 however. I just don't have time).

Re: Five Minute Rant
I've sort of become immune to rejections. After hitting 20, I think I became like the king who slowly drinks poison so he builds up a resistance. At first, it kinda stung, but then you realize rejection can be divorced from quality. Excellent stories get rejected. My attitude is to pump out science ...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!
Hello! I made my first submission to Writers of the Future yesterday. It's the longest short story I've written yet -- although still nowhere near the 17,000 limit -- and I had a lot of fun working on it. Now I need to concentrate on my entry for Q4, make progress on my other writing projects, and ...

Also, "Solaris" by Stainslaw Lem is fantastic. It's got his classic cynicism about human beings, which I quite enjoy.

Re: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books You Enjoy?
Speaking generally, I'm also a pacifist. But when it comes to art, honesty is key...and let's face it, the world is a harsh, violent place sometimes. So I think it makes sense that a lot of science fiction and fantasy involves a lot of violence. Right, but it's a matter of glorification. This is wh...

Re: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books You Enjoy?
I really need to pick up The Forever War next time I get paid. I've read a couple short stories by Haldeman, which were fantastic, but I keep seeing The Forever War being mentioned all over the place, often touted as the greatest example of military SF ever. Hard to ignore a reputation like that. I...

Re: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books You Enjoy?
Pretty much anything by Philip K. Dick. Thought his stuff in the late 70's and 80's isn't as good as his earlier stuff. I probably recommend his short story collections. He was a master at short fiction. Of his novels, "The World Jones Made," is very good, as are "Do Androids Dream of...

Well, I surmise from your picture that you're a female, so in the 1920's vernacular, that would make you a "doll." But, we're in a different era, so we can probably flaunt the rules of 1920's word use wotf004 As for rejections, meh, they don't get me too down now. I mean, Dune got rejecte...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!
Well Martin, when Clarkesworld and Lightspeed usually respond within 2-3 days, it's easy to rack up the rejections. wotf019 Plus, the short Daily Science Fiction stories can be written and revised in an hour or 2. I usually have 4 or 5 stories out at a time. Oh well. You win some and you lose some. ...
