Re: Success!

Congratulations Elinor, that's exciting! And you're absolutely right, we should never take rejection from a single market as commentary on the quality of our work--or even from several markets. Everyone is looking for something, and if our work doesn't fit its not goin' in regardless of how well wri...

Re: Indie writer's web pages

I haven't set up a publishing website but I've heard of others who have and found it useful. Here's some thoughts: http://www.independentpublisher.com/article.php?page=1810 http://selfpublishingadvice.org/should-self-published-authors-create-their-own-publishing-imprints/ One question is, do you jus...

Creative practice: Look-back fever: I'm a plotter. Plotting speeds my efforts, but there's a danger of becoming overly analytical; writing a sentence and immediately editing it or constantly checking my plot outline. Look-back fever kicks the little creative guy out of the driver's seat in favor of...

Pressure is but the crucible which...leaves me unable to finish this analogy. Just as well. Harrumph. If we're talking about steel making, there is no abnormal pressure in a crucible. The process was invented by Benjamin Huntsman in Sheffield, Yorkshire in the mid-18th century. Sadly for him he fai...

Re: Creative Practice

I get a lot of ideas for premises, characters, themes, and setups from watching television pilots. I totally liken what we do here to writing pilots. I mean, we have to introduce characters, our world, our universe, then combine them all with a cool plot, rising tension, and something unique/never ...

Re: Creative Practice

Some great insights. Analyzing reading is a great idea, I haven't done it in awhile but I'm reading some pretty great stuff just now so I might start taking notes. It's interesting how often freeing the mind seems to play a role. Space for reflection, in the car, in the shower, in a library, etc. So...

Creative Practice

I sat in on a lecture earlier this year on 'creative practice.' In that context, this meant the particular set of approaches that a writer uses to open up their minds to new ideas, explore their voice, spark their creativity, and do creative research. Responding to writing prompts in order to get th...

Thanks for the encouragement you guys. Three rejections in 48 hours left me feeling pretty down. I know, I know. It's part of it, and since I'm just starting out, it's going to be a long road. That's okay. I'm willing to walk it. It just left me a little blue is all. My rejections for 2015 just hit...

How's this for a personal rejection from a long-standing semi-pro mag: I'm sorry to say that after a couple of reviews from others, we decided not to use [redacted]. Just don't have room for that story at the moment. However, it was impressive enough to go through 3 stages. We did like your writing...
