Re: Quarter 1 Writers and illustrators of the Future Vol 35

I'd scrub through the two main threads and see if any of the folks who said they submitted "late" got their responses back yet. If not, hold off for a day or two. If they have, shoot her an email as soon as you'd like. Hope that helps! I don't see that any of the other "late" fo...

Congrats to everyone who heard back already. I was really hoping to hear something by now, because the anticipation of not knowing is killing me, whatever the response is. But I was also one of those who got locked out on December 31st and had to email my sub to Joni because I waited too long. I ho...

You can always join up with Critters online and get feedback on your stories. I've always received feedback from at least ten or a dozen different people and most of the information is pretty useful.

I totally feel your pain, LD. You meet that one editor and the two of you totally connect and they really like what they're seeing in your work, but your work isn't selling at THEIR OWN MAGAZINE. Argh! Workshops are unique because it's a smaller group of writers and the workshop leader -- in this ca...

Re: Who’s familiar with Dwight Swain’s scene/sequel format?

I've driven myself nuts in the past trying to box my story into a pre-fabricated package where so many rules apply. I've always thought of Swain's scene/sequel format more of a guideline of how the elements of a story naturally progress, rather than a step by step plotting guide where every thing mu...

Here are my two French francs-worth on the topic... Middle of the Night Writing

I woke up last night around one in the morning and knew I wouldn't get back to sleep unless I got right up and wrote some stuff down. So I left the bedroom and turned on a lamp and spilled the contents of my brain out onto the pages of my notebook. Thirty minutes later I read over what I had written...

Is it common to submit the same story (with extra editing /tweaking) for the contest more than once? That's very interesting. Gregory Maguire made quite a successful career from his fairy tale retellings (Wicked, Leaping Beauty, Mirror Mirror, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, etc.) I think the real key is: what new twist can you give the story to make it fresh and different? Making only a few small tweaks to the original...
