Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

Hi all. A quick question for off of you that have been published in the WOTF annual books. How different was your original story from the final published version? Did you find your stories required a lot of polishing/revision/editing? Or were there only minimal polishing edits??? (I'm gaging the st...

Re: Can I plagiarize my own material?

Scalables is the publication business model principle of resales and optional subsidiary rights placements, as much a facet for writers' considerations as publishers and agents'. Digest reprints and book anthologies might earn and, therefore, pay more than a first-publication sale. Might not. Short...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

I'm late getting into the game for Q4, but on my way! Finally finished a very rough draft during my lunch hour today. This one's going to be big, I fear, probably +10,000 words. A real monster. Starting the first rewrite tomorrow, where I hope to start sticking blood and flesh on this skeleton. Then...

Yikes. I've been dealing with other deadlines, but now a month has gone by, and look at all you busy bees! Good job! I just had a vision of Darth Vader. He sucked on his regulator, stabbed a finger in my face and said, "I am here to put you back on schedule." I assured him I was working a...

Re: Simultaneous Submissions

If you are looking for an agent to represent you, your best bet is to pick up a copy of Writers Market or subscribe to Writers Digest and find several who seem like they'd be a good fit for a) your work, b) your goals as a writer, and c) your personality. Write a brief letter to each and let them kn...

I've collected a good number of writing books. I read anywhere from twenty to thirty novels a year. I've also attended a lot of workshops, joined up with writing groups, taken classes, subscribed to online magazines, listened to podcasts, etc. It's been several years and I get frequent personal reje...

Re: Hooked on the Dragon

I use Dragon Dictation on my morning and evening commutes to and from the office. I like it, although sometimes I have to scratch my head deciphering what the app hears me saying. I don't, however, use it when I write at the library or other public spaces where other people are trying to concentrate...

I'm also in the fresh camp; I don't resubmit old stories. I interpret Dave's R and HM stamp to mean my story still lacks a certain fundamental "Awesomeness Factor." In order for me to put that factor into my story, I'd pretty much have to break the whole thing down and completely rewrite i...

Dang! So close! I had a story that was being held for consideration by a semi-pro magazine. I sent them a follow-up after their deadline had passed for getting back to me. The final outcome of the contest is always the annual anthology. I'm sure Dave wants to make sure there's a little bit of everything in that anthology -- a melting pot flavored by all the subgenres found inside fantasy and science fiction. So you might submit an amazing fantasy story in Q4, but if t...
