Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Isn't there a thread somewhere specifically for critique exchanges? I thought I saw it once but can't seem to find it now. I've got one person currently reviewing my Q1 entry, but would like at least a couple more people to give me a content critique. Any takers? Of course I'm more than happy to ret...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Just finished another round of rewrites. Looks like I'm going to make it for Q1 after all, although this isn't the story I had originally intended to submit. This one is coming in just shy of 2300 words though and that concerns me. Is that too short for the contest? Should I add some more depth and ...

Re: Retellings

I'd speculate that just about every story is really a retelling of some kind or another. After all, just how many really *new* ideas are there? Think how many vampire stories and ghost stories and elf/goblin/dragon stories there are -- aren't they all really based on the same premise? Yet they're al...

Starting to get really worried I'm not going to make it this quarter, gang. Just seem to be SO MANY other demands on my time right now. Can't seem to get into it.

Nice going everyone!

As soon as I got to my lunch hour today, I sent my HM story out into the markets to try and find a home. Guess we'll see if anyone is willing to adopt.

Does anyone know how many submissions they received for Q4?

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Some people have for sure. A recent winner had to "withdraw" a piece because she submitted before learning that she had won. I think many (most?) tend not to submit before hearing the prior quarter's results simply because they're still working on/tweaking/obsessing over a piece until the...

Nice going on the sale, Wulf. And your comments are so very valuable. I started writing seriously about five years ago and entered Q3 and Q4 2012. Flat out rejected both times and I let it crush my hopes and dreams. But then I put on my big boy pants and got back to work. Q4 this year is the first t...

I can't even imagine what it must be like for Dave to get through THOUSANDS of stories every single quarter like that. Re: Form vs Personal Rejection

I usually count it as a personal rejection if the sender mentions something they either really liked about my story and/or offered some specific reason for why they didn't accept it. For example, I recently got this one, which I consider a personal rejection: Dear Morgan, Thank you for your patience...

Thanks for posting Matt. Filtering/distancing is something I became more aware of this year. Anna Yeatts over at FFO brought it to my attention via her online writing classes and critique comments. Apparently I was/am pretty bad about it, but have (hopefully) improved just by being more aware of it....

Ahhh...the age-old question. It always seems to be different for everyone. But I think what it really all comes down to is keeping an open mind and an active curiosity, trying to see old things in new ways, paying attention to what's going on around you, and always asking yourself, "What if...?...

Re: Why Do You Write?

I think you have to be very careful when you look at speed-to-market and the business side of writing. There are lots of pro writers who use ghostwriters to help them publish book after book after book. So when you see pro authors cranking out two or three or four novels a year, chances are good the...

Hi Chris, I was this EXACT SAME WAY when I first started out! I had this really fantastic idea for a novel and jumped right in with both feet. Ha ha! Werd. I vote for option c) Not only do I love the stuff I'm dreaming up, but other people love it enough to support me while I do it full time. It would be nice to reach a point where I'm actually losing money by NOT writing!
