Re: Filter words

Thanks for posting Matt. Filtering/distancing is something I became more aware of this year. Anna Yeatts over at FFO brought it to my attention via her online writing classes and critique comments. Apparently I was/am pretty bad about it, but have (hopefully) improved just by being more aware of it....

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

So... it's Thursday! The first Thursday I've felt like we might have a chance of seeing results. Probably way too soon, right? Ha ha! This is probably one of those things where you're hoping you DON'T see an email this early, right? Because the rejections are probably the first ones to get notified...

Re: Where do you get your inspiration?

A lot of my story ideas have come from playing video games and wanting to take things a different direction than they did. Such as "What if Zelda was jealous that Link found the Master Sword?" Ha ha! That's awesome! And gives me a good excuse to play more video games. "I'm doing rese...

Re: Where do you get your inspiration?

Ahhh...the age-old question. It always seems to be different for everyone. But I think what it really all comes down to is keeping an open mind and an active curiosity, trying to see old things in new ways, paying attention to what's going on around you, and always asking yourself, "What if...?...

Re: Why Do You Write?

I think you have to be very careful when you look at speed-to-market and the business side of writing. There are lots of pro writers who use ghostwriters to help them publish book after book after book. So when you see pro authors cranking out two or three or four novels a year, chances are good the...

Re: Go for the novel? Or stick with the short story?

Hi Chris, I was this EXACT SAME WAY when I first started out! I had this really fantastic idea for a novel and jumped right in with both feet. I had no idea what I was doing, just kept plodding along anyway. After about eight months though, I was totally burned out; it was like hitting a concrete ba...

Ha ha! Werd. I vote for option c) Not only do I love the stuff I'm dreaming up, but other people love it enough to support me while I do it full time. It would be nice to reach a point where I'm actually losing money by NOT writing!

Got a personal rejection from F&SF last night. That’s pretty delightful, for me. I got a form rejection from them a few months ago on a different story. I still want that first sale, of course, but like you guys said, this means I’m on the right track. Just keep writing, finishing, and submitti...

They make you wait until the announcement on stage. They make you wait until after the illustrators' grand prize, even. This in no way reduces you to a quivering bag of nerves in a tuxedo. Nope. Re: How Short Is Too Short?

My Q4 submission started out as a 1,500 word flash story. After it went through Critters, the message I got was that it needed a lot more fleshing out. So after several rewrites, it morphed into 7,000 words. Hope I did it enough justice and didn't just end up blowing lots of hot air into a small bal...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

I've sent several stories out to Flash Fiction Online this year. None have been accepted yet, but I've received personal feedback on two of them. In my last one, Suzanne Vincent emailed to say my story made it into the final round of reviews, wasn't selected, but if I was interested, she'd be happy ...

Sounds like you've done a fantastic job getting your heroes into big trouble! Nice job making things hard on them. Re: Whats a good number of pages to have in one full chapter?

The answer to everything in writing is . . . it depends! lol Scenes tend to have a natural ending, so a good place to end a chapter would be at the point where the scene breaks, typically when things go horribly wrong, or the hero decides on a new goal. You could also end a chapter at a point of hig...
