I'm pleased to announce that my short story The Ship of Theseus has been published in the August 2017 edition of Phantaxis Magazine. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51fg%2Bx7yHGL.jpg I'm very fond of this story, in which an undercover cop in a dystopian future San Francisco discover...

Re: Past Quarter Statistics

It's the reality of publishing. Lots of people auditioning. Room for few on the stage. You have to ignore all the other people sitting in the hallway and keep saying, "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people LIKE me!" And when you don't get hired at the audition, you say...

Thanks Aaron. Whatever the outcome, I've certainly learned a lot about writing from this contest. On the other hand I do still need my mistakes pointed out!

Congratulations Jeremy! Apparently story sales are like London buses: you wait ages and then two come along at once. After 'The Ship of Theseus', my story 'The Black Horse' has been accepted by Third Flatiron for their anthology Strange Beasties . This one adds to my embarrassingly large number of p...

And since we're talking about typos, maybe this is a good time to mention that text reader programs do read out what you've written whereas when you read it through you read what you think you've written. Re: Drafting

Sometimes you take a wrong turn and it's helpful to have a fixed point to which you can return and start again, or from which you can rescue a section deleted in error. Sometimes I've tried to cut down a long story in order to submit to a call for limited-length submissions, such as Flame Tree's 400...

I liked this story enough to write a sequel already.

Entries are increasing year on year, so we're told. Some time ago rumour had it that there were around 1,000 entries per quarter. More recently speculation has suggested 2,000. With no slush readers and the coordinating judge responsible for getting through anything up to 20 stories a day, he inevit...

I signed the contract and the editor said it was safe to share, so here we go: Mad Scientist Journal put out a call for classified ads and are planning to publish my submission in March 2018. To expand on this, is it imperative that the first sentence be the hook or might it be included within the first paragraph or somewhere in the first page. Imagine the reader to have the attenti...
