Re: Drafting

Sometimes you take a wrong turn and it's helpful to have a fixed point to which you can return and start again, or from which you can rescue a section deleted in error. Sometimes I've tried to cut down a long story in order to submit to a call for limited-length submissions, such as Flame Tree's 400...

Re: Success!

A little flower has blossomed in the desert. My story The Ship of Theseus (7400 words) has been accepted for August's edition of Phantaxis.

I liked this story enough to write a sequel already.

Because everyone admires Heraclitus, right? wotf011

Re: Success!

Tangentially related to writing success... my first self-published book, Immortal , just got me my first real, career-based writing job. After 17 years in IT, I get to write for a living and leave tech troubleshooting to others. I'm calling it a win! wotf007 It's what you're calling it that matters...

Re: Past Quarter Statistics

Entries are increasing year on year, so we're told. Some time ago rumour had it that there were around 1,000 entries per quarter. More recently speculation has suggested 2,000. With no slush readers and the coordinating judge responsible for getting through anything up to 20 stories a day, he inevit...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

Just in case anyone was wondering where I was, the answer was one of Greece, the Greek Islands, Montenegro, Croatia or Venice, depending on when you were wondering. And if anyone was wondering what happened to my entry: wotf056 I had the nerve to tell Joni this was somewhat disappointing. She told m...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 34

And since we're talking about typos, maybe this is a good time to mention that text reader programs do read out what you've written whereas when you read it through you read what you think you've written. Alternative is getting a helpful friend to read it for you, or even, some say, to reading it al...

Re: Success!

I signed the contract and the editor said it was safe to share, so here we go: Mad Scientist Journal put out a call for classified ads and are planning to publish my submission in March 2018. It's a 180ish word fictional classified ad, so I'm not sure if that falls into flash or an even smaller cat...

Congratulations on the recent successes, folks, especially jficke13. First sale is the best sale, and I'm looking forward to hearing the details! I have a flash piece out today in T. Re: Success!

Not to be too much of a wet blanket, but when I received my first acceptance in 2014 it never occurred to me that an acceptance might not result in the publication of my story. Since then I've had two such cases (respecting 'sales' which I happily announced in these pages) and come close to a third....

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

Thank you. I really appreciate the advice. I had no idea how much the first page mattered until recently. To expand on this, is it imperative that the first sentence be the hook or might it be included within the first paragraph or somewhere in the first page. Imagine the reader to have the attenti...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

This was my second submission and my second rejection. I think the hardest part is knowing Mr. Farland probably only made it through a page and a half before chucking it. I also had to learn the hard way that you cannot write WotF short stories as if you were writing a novel. Dave's comment on my s...

Well, not only has my story 'The Waiting Room' been accepted by Third and Starlight but I got a really nice note from Dr Bob about it.
