Re: Form vs Personal Rejection

My rule of thumb is that in order to count as personal, a rejection has to refer to your story. Analog, for example, has a realtively rare 'send more' form rejection which is an honour in itself. As I recall it makes a reference to liking your style of writing, but says nothing about the story itsel...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Ah! Thanks JV, but sadly the membership fee is nearly two thirds of the income from a professional story. I've been qualified for quite a while, because SFWA don't employ the exclusions that WotF does. However, although I'm told there are discounts for impoverished foreigners such as I, I'll have to...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

You are most kind, Moon. I'm not sure whether I was being asked for my story method or my determination method. Stubbornness comes as part of the package when you're born in Yorkshire. Plus I tend to tackle things that I find daunting because they aren't allowed to beat me. Such as taking up steeple...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Ishmael, your determination is certainly an inspiration! ... So how do you do it? 1. Idea 2. extensive research 3. start writing 4. write your protagonist into an impossible corner 5. have another idea to get your protagonist out of the corner 6. write the rest 7. go back and eliminate verbiage and...

Re: Why Do You Write?

How would you know? People now considered geniuses were not necessarily so recognised in their lifetimes. How many paintings did Van Gogh sell? Okay, the answer is actually one, not none as many people think. (The Red Vineyard at Arles). Particularly in science fiction it's very easy for your work t...

Re: Success!

I suspect I almost always submit to the biggest venues before a story 's ready, for the simple reason that I don't know it's not ready until it's rejected, I re-read it and I see what's wrong. Right now I have about fifty stories out in the wild. That's largely because I refuse to give up. I've made...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

I wish all the best to those aiming for 4 in 35. Sadly my entry streak comes to an end with 34/4. Unless I've miscounted, my entry streak goes back to 29/3 and my streak of HM or better to 32/1. Prior to 32/1 I'd netted just 2 HMs. It just goes to show you can learn how to do this (more or less). My...

Re: Questions: Scene breaks

I used to be told I had a great accent too. Then I asked how it was considered possible for an Englishman to speak English with an English accent. I mean, do we accuse the French of speaking French with a French accent? (I have to concede that my accent nowadays places me somewhere between Windsor ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Now we are in the last week, one of traditional heavy traffic. Also remember the online entry system has a habit of shutting down part way through the last day, so if you're going to run it to the line, make sure you have Joni's email. And, for what in all probability will be my lost shot at the tit...

Re: Success!

I fear I took your name in vain in my letter to Mike, George. He replied that if George vouched for me it was good enough for him, so I hope the story I sent him was worthy of your trust. I've worked and reworked this one until I hardly know where I am with it, but I'm firmly convinced it's at least...

Re: Success!

Thanks George, I didn't know this. Maybe after this quick flush of pro-sales I might summon up the courage to ask. Unfortunately of course it will also put an end to my career as a WotF competitor. I don't think even Joni can stretch the rules any further to keep me in. Theoretically, if Flame Tree ...

From correspondence with Gillian Whitaker I have ' in the range of 60,000 to 120,000 words – in the realms of SF, fantasy, horror and crime fiction.' Also 'our preference really is for completely new novels, previously unpublished in any form (on the basis that they have already had some exposure in...

Wow, Ishmael! You are an inspiration. When are we going to see your first novel? Thanks, Preston, but remember I couldn't sell anything in the first half of the year so I wasn't too inspirational then! Actually I self-published a novel The Prophets of Baal a few years ago. It was the discovery that...

wotf013 And I've actually sold another story but I can't say where as yet. Okay I know this looks swollen-headed but in the first half of this year I couldn't sell a story to save my life! Commiserations to the R's. Twenty odd reported on The Grinder so this is a substantial wave. Newcomers should take some consolation from the quality of the experienced writers who went down at the same time. I wonder if this early date for the first round suggests Dave wants to clear the decks for a...

Re: Past Quarter Statistics

It's the reality of publishing. Lots of people auditioning. Room for few on the stage. You have to ignore all the other people sitting in the hallway and keep saying, "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people LIKE me!" And when you don't get hired at the audition, you say...
