Re: pseudonyms

On a related note, is it still limiting to have a female name when writing sci fi novels, or are we past that now?

Re: pseudonyms

Thanks all. I think I'll continue to use my more easily pronounceable/spell-able name then. My current name isn't very long, but in my experience nearly everyone I've ever met has had difficulty even attempting it.

pseudonyms

Is there a general consensus on whether or not it's worth the hassle to use a pseudonym if you have an unpronounceable (and therefore difficult to remember) name? I'm considering submitting fiction under my maiden name because it's at least phonetic, and would also give me some privacy/separation fr...

writing books

Anyone have a favorite? I'm sure they have limited usefulness if you already know what you're doing, but as a relative beginner, I find I'm in need of something to help me along. I can't afford a class at the moment, so this seems a good place to start. Suggestions? I'm looking for something that fo...

Re: Flash Fiction Exchange

Not sure if you're still interested, but I'd be willing to exchange flash critiques with you. I have one that is ~700 words...I also have a micro version of the same story that is ~150 words. Would be happy to trade either or both. Just let me know if you're interested.

Short critique exchange?

I have a very short flash fiction piece (~150 words) I'd like to get some feedback on. Anyone interested in swapping critiques? Obviously mine is not for the contest, but I can critique your first 500-ish words if anyone would like some initial feedback. Just let me know. I guess I'd call mine dark ...

Re: First Four-Fifty Critique Exchanges

Alternatively, I have a non-contest-related piece of (fantasy-ish) flash fiction I've been toying with...if anyone wants to swap for that one instead it's only about 135 words. *grovels shamelessly* wotf007 Fair warning, it's my first attempt at this length.

Re: First Four-Fifty Critique Exchanges

Ishmael, I wouldn't mind swapping. I have a sci fi with a 500-ish word opener. I sent you a
PM. If you're interested just let me know.

Thanks, I might give that a shot down the road. But for now I'm fairly certain my initial attempts are terrible, lol! wotf007

online crit sites for flash fiction?

I thought I'd try writing some flash fiction (short stuff, like 150 words or less) as an exercise. I figure it'll help tighten up my writing, or at the very least get the creative juices flowing before I sit down to work on my longer stories. Since it's not a length I've tried before, I was wonderin...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Howdy, all. I'm technically not new here, but just returned after a hiatus. I've been really lazy about writing lately, so I've decided to enter next quarter for the first time (and every quarter after that), just to give myself a kick in the pants to write more (and finish more!). I don't expect to...

Re: Q1 trade 7-8k

If you're looking for another critique I have a sci-fi story (not intended for the contest) I could swap you in the 4-5K word range. Fair warning, it's fairly corny, so I'd be looking more for story/sentence structure type feedback (so I can carry what I learn over to my next story) rather than feed...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Too true! I had trouble getting my story started this morning, so I finally gave up and wrote the end first. Does anyone else do that, or am I just weird? I was going along pretty well until I realized I had written an entire paragraph using the exact same sentence structure...ugh! I think it's time...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Just hopping in to say hello. I haven't written anything in a looong time, so hopefully hanging out around here will keep me honest! I sat down this week and came up with about 30 random story ideas, so this weekend I'll give one of 'em a whirl. It'll probably STINK, but that's ok. I have the air fr...

I don't mind being a test reader if you want another set of eyes. Just send me a PM if you're interested and I'll give you an email address. Fair warning though, I have only done a handful of critiques...I'll do my best, though! =)
