Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Amos, I'll probably still be around for Magic in the 4th, v 36. Ha! I really want to get in this Q. I got a silver for 2/35, then an R. That's my year. Not very satisfying. I've got a great story that just needs time and attention. And I've got three months. Fingers crossed! p.s. Thanks Gruffbane. ...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

HM for me. I'd hoped for more, but it is my first non-R in two years, so something to build on.

The sad thing is, I forgot my cell phone today. Or maybe that's a good thing. I need only watch my email. Less twitchy that way.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

Odds are an HM for me, because so far I've either received an early round R or an HM and I'm past the early round...
That said, my first readers both said this is my strongest story yet, so maybe, just maybe, I'll break that HM barrier this time.

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

This challenge caused two of my four stories this year to be created in the eleventh hour. Didn't know it could be done, but I pulled it out somehow. Thank you for setting this up, Dustin.

I made it in, four for four in thirty-five! This is my shortest entry ever, so I do not have high hopes, but I do like the story.

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

I'm still pushing for this quarter but it is looking grim. I'm at 9K+ and probably have at least 1000 words to go in my rough draft. I don't see how I can clean that up in less than a week to submittable quality. Sigh. Looks like I'll be 3/4 for this year. I'm toying with the idea a pushing out a fl...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

So... Do writers normally get these notifications or is this something new? Either way, can one speculate that receiving this notification means they have achieved at least HM? Something similar has been done in the past and then they stopped for whatever reason. It does not guarantee an HM or high...

Re: Unintentional Relevance

A few years back, I was in a similar situation. I submitted a story with the biblical story of Noah as the major theme (with a sci-fi twist). As soon as I submitted, I heard that a major picture about Noah was coming out. Well, long story short, that movie bombed (I watched it, it was bad) and my st...

Re: All countdown stories

Indication that the ending didn't work: If I quickly forget what the ending was. This. I couldn't think of the title of recent story that had this issue or even what it was about. The only thing I remember is feeling annoyed. And that is why a non-ending ending is a bad idea. We really need to leav...

Re: All countdown stories

OK, I actually read the Cat Rambo story now. I like it. I did not feel like it ended abruptly. Its arc began and ended where you would think it would, so I agree with Orbivillein, the blogposter missed the point. I have seen stories recently though just seemed to cut off mid-arc or even sooner. Mayb...

Re: All countdown stories

I’ve mentioned this precise phenomenon to a few writing friends recently based on stories I read in the pro magazines. Curious to hear your thoughts. https://drmauser.wordpress.com/2018/06/28/fizzle/ I've noticed this in a few stories lately. From a writer's point of view, I understand why it happe...

Re: History of LGBTQ+ Characters in the Contest

I agree with what everyone said above. I would also add that writing with a fear of rejection is counter-productive. It will prevent you from taking the risks necessary for your story to have any chance. This contest, and indeed any venue worth publishing in, is looking for more than just competence...
