Re: Tim Power's "Power Reading List"
I'd also recommend going in the other direction and reading HG Wells (Time Machine, War of the Worlds) and Jules Verne (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth)

Re: Tim Power's "Power Reading List"
I am encouraged that I have read more than a few on this list already. Certainly a lot I haven't read, though, so thank you for posting. I just finished Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Awesome read and, aside from a few references here and there, it feels remarkably modern. Why The Shining ? Th...

Yes, but every day is Thursday. wotf011 This is a problem. It's extremely difficult for me to move on before a conclusion has been reached on a previous work. I'm tweaking my submission to death instead of finishing anything else. wotf051 The only remedy I've found for this is to have many submissi...

Here's an idea, since Sean Hazlett dropped by (hi Sean!). Why don't we fill the short jaunt to 5000 with advice on how to win the contest from former winners. It can be something you did that turned the page, something you learned at the workshop, something someone told you on a critique, advice fr...

At a workshop, Dave and his son (cannot remember his name) discussed creating anchors. I picked up swimming in January and of course -didn't have my phone. So, my mind wandered all on its own... Then I started anticipating it and thinking intentionally of scenes I wanted to figure out or questions ...

Can the story be more than 17000 words? Nope. Nor can it be over 68 pages of courier new 12 pt 1.5" margins. (someone correct me if I'm wrong on the #s) Reason: 250 words per page (printed) x 68 = 17000 The exacting format page count used to be the correct answer, but my understanding is DF re...

Re: What's a Silver Honorable Mention as opposed to a regular HM?
In general, you put the best credits you can in your cover letter. So, "I was published in Fantasy and Science Fiction." would be a pretty excellent credit. Most of us don't have that though, so we put "I was published in Cripple Creek Review." or whatever. If you don't have any ...

1. No, they want only unpublished stories to be entered. That also means you should not submit a story that you self-published or posted to your website, blog, etc. The rule you are referencing is regarding author eligibility. If you publish four or more short stories in pro markets, then you have p...

There was a short story I had written in high school, my teacher said I needed to get it published. It sat in a pile of nothing and became lost. I couldn't fi...

Thanks guys. Editorial taste indeed. To quote Matt Dovey from another thread, "Never self reject!" and to quote Robert Heinlein, "Keep sending it out until it sells!" Or in today's world, keep sending it out until you decide to self publish it.

Re: Word Counts
I've always assumed it was the body only, but I do not think there is a universal rule that applies to all markets. Also, most markets do not need a level a precision that the extra words of the title, byline, address ,etc. would matter. Usually when such precision does matter, they will specify in ...

This might be jumping the gun a bit, but seeing how a lot of forum members have already turned in their Q4 stories and are working on Q1, I thought I'd start this thread. I don't see why not. I believe DF turned his winning story for this contest into a novel and I'm sure there are plenty of other examples like that one.

My Nature story is out: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-017-07228-2 I'm quite proud of this one. It is the first story that made my beta readers cry and at 950 words that's hard to do. Oh yes! But the interview is almost better than the story. There's more here Aaron. You've created a world ...
