Re: Five Minute Rant

Lukewarm would be someway of saying "send in another story" evidently editors who say that mean it and aren't just being nice or polite. Hot would be a personal comment, especially if it says you were close. FWIW this is what we do at PodCastle. There are 4 tiers of rejections, available ...

Re: Magic in the 4th

I've been thinking about what I want to write about. I have a vague concept that I want to try, but it is going to need some more work before I can even do a log line.

But first, I've got to finish up Q3. Just finished my first draft.

MIne was submitted 57 days ago. Having misplaced Mike's email address, I sent it to the general submissions when the slush pile was opened to non-invitees for the first time two months ago. It looks as though Mike's continued to reply promptly to those that go direct to him, but very little activit...

Re: Five Minute Rant

I understand the emotional need for validation. When you get 50 nos for every yes, you begin to wonder, "are any of these at least a maybe?" But the bottom line is a "warm" is still a no, and if you were to get 50 warms in row, you'd start thinking, they just don't want me to fee...

An anthology I am in, The Chronos Chronicles, just came out on Amazon:

This is very exciting to me because my story in this, The Wishing Place, is the first short story I wrote.

Hot and Cold Has anyone played that kid's game? Kid One hides an object somewhere in a room and Kid Two tries to find it. Kid One calls out, "You're getting hotter" as Kid Two approaches the object and, "You're getting colder" as Kid Two moves farther from it. The point is for K...

. Constantly writing in my mind, rarely getting it typed up. For years that is how I wrote. I hardly ever typed out anything. A couple(literally) of times I tried I got stuck on which way the story should go, then it became too much like work. The quantum theory of story telling, as soon as you wri...

Re: Reject Rejectomancy!

Shelving a story because we believe Dave didn't like it is the worst kind of rejectomancy! I can attest to this personally. I've sold four out of seven R's from this contest and I've yet to have sold any of my five HM's. This is just another market with its own needs and own tastes. Dave has a lot ...

I am encouraged that I have read more than a few on this list already. Certainly a lot I haven't read, though, so thank you for posting. I just finished Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Awesome read and, aside from a few references here and there, it feels remarkably modern. Why The Shining ? Th...

Here's an idea, since Sean Hazlett dropped by (hi Sean!). Why don't we fill the short jaunt to 5000 with advice on how to win the contest from former winners. It can be something you did that turned the page, something you learned at the workshop, something someone told you on a critique, advice fr...

Can the story be more than 17000 words? Nope. Nor can it be over 68 pages of courier new 12 pt 1.5" margins. (someone correct me if I'm wrong on the #s) Reason: 250 words per page (printed) x 68 = 17000 The exacting format page count used to be the correct answer, but my understanding is DF re...

Re: What's a Silver Honorable Mention as opposed to a regular HM?

In general, you put the best credits you can in your cover letter. So, "I was published in Fantasy and Science Fiction." would be a pretty excellent credit. Most of us don't have that though, so we put "I was published in Cripple Creek Review." or whatever. If you don't have any ...

1. No, they want only unpublished stories to be entered. That also means you should not submit a story that you self-published or posted to your website, blog, etc. The rule you are referencing is regarding author eligibility. If you publish four or more short stories in pro markets, then you have p...
