Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Ah, Wulf, I heard you call in about the 34 minute mark. Good interview. Brian had some helpful comments re submitting to F&SF magazine. Sounds like the editors appeal leans toward: - tight stories with strong world building - Believable characters who move on their own, and - strong vibrant word...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Wow, that was fast. I just got my first personal rejection from F&SF Magazine. Less than 24 hour turn around. Dear Christopher Thank you for giving me a chance to read "Magician’s Midlife Crisis." I appreciated the quality of the prose, but overall the story didn't quite win me over an...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Thanks Wulf . I’ve exorcized my procurement skills, utilizing Amazon’s “Buy With One Click” button. And a big thank you to Girl in the Glasses who read through my Q3 sub and identified issues that I’d failed to see. Before submitting, I changes a character’s gender from female to male, but I complet...

Re: Dave Farland's Workshop

Thanks for sharing. I fully intend to obsess over those points for many moons. Also, it does make me feel a little better about my HM in Q3. I'd submitted with the intentions of an upward trajectory (my previous entry was also and HM, so I was hoping for a SHM). Anyway, I agree with others that that...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Thanks for your comments Wulf-all good valid points. Reading your vignette helped a lot! Also, this "killing year darlins" challenge has been a huge asset for me already. I've heard writing advice for years talking about an economy of words and getting bang for your buck. But it wasnt unti...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

Humor is subjective. The best advice on humor I’ve heard is to draw down as many times on the same punchline as possible. A few years ago I published a humorous novella called “so you wanna be a desperado demon slayer”. It was one long inappropriate joke bound tightly together with hundreds of small...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

1. What exactly is denoument, and why must a story have it? Once the MC’s satisfied his primary goal (main plot line) via the climax, the denoument wraps up all the various story threads and subplots. Many of these sub plots could not have been wrapped up until the conclusion of the climax. 2. Desc...

I’m in. Story title: The under-galactic railroad 500-word version Lee twisted the knob at the base of the kerosene lantern. Its flame grew, casting a sickly dandelion glow over the Jon Boat’s aluminum cavity, the stagnant swamp, and the machete between him and Adelaide. “What is this?” The tips of A...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I've got a solid grasp if T/F cycles, but struggle to fit three of them into a flash story. If I do, I feel like their either shallow or I go over the word count. Though, I appreciate this is a key learning from for this exercise. I wonder, however, if flash fiction requires three try/Fail cycles. I...

Henckel, your life story sounds sounds like something out of a Ken Follett novel. I've heard some amazing tales but you're like the protagonist in an action-oriented movie directed by JJ Abrams. There is "LOST'" and then there is "HENCKEL LOST." You should pen an autobiography o...

I speculate that finalists and winners will have already received a personal phone call by now. For the rest of us, we're waiting on the email to say if our story was rejected or revived an HM, SHM, SF, or WTFs.
