Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Anyhow if anyone else wants to switch gears from Q2 to Q3 with me you are welcome wotf011 I've switched, but considering they're still judging Q2 I wouldn't expect results here for a month or two. Personal opinion is we'll be lucky to hear back by the end of September. wotf017 From experience, it n...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

I had really good luck with developing character arcs using Donald Maass techniques. Thanks WriterGirl0426! That's really helpful! After a lot of consideration, I've decided to cut this character and another from my story. I liked them bother, but they were't the right fit. I've replaces them with ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

My SHM entry dealt with a man whose daughter had died years earlier, but with context that: A) his work revolved around other people's deaths, and B) he believed that he may be able to undo her death. It got picked up and published by On Spec later. Ah, nice. You had yours tied to your central plot...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

I'd also recommend (in conjunction with what she said) taking a look at what that character's goals are, as that should touch on his emotional/internal arc. Excellent recommendation empressed. My canumdrum now is that this character has no goals. No motivation. The incident with his daughter left h...

Thanks for your comment! Absolutely. He has his own life and such in the story that has nothing to do with his past. This little back story of his is simply to a more rounded character with his own past. ...and yep, you're totally on the mark with his personal acr either contrast the main characters...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

Hi all – What are your thoughts on closing off a character arc for one of my secondary characters. I don’t mind sharing here, because this is part of a full novel/not WOTF story… and I’m interested to hear everyone’s perspective on this. My character is a dad whose daughter was killed years ago. The...

Remember, there was a time when even Stephen King couldn't write his way out of a wet paper bag. But through the grace of cocain and looming poverty, he persevered.

... Yeah, that didn't come off as encouraging as I'd intended....

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

I'm trying to work out what to write for Q4. So far, this is the best idea I've got "A post-singularity starpunk story about a space clown saving penguin-people from an asteroid strike". Dunno where the idea came from, but it's right up my street. Space clown as a surprise hero. Penguin p...

Sounds like a solid plan. I've learned a LOT since my HM last year and put in a lot of effort to making this Qs sub the best it can be.... I'm in a weird transition with my writing. I forget who was being interviewed. Some advice about not overpolishing your stories because they'll just come out looki...

For those of us not based in the USA, remember to change your document size and margins to US letter set the margins to 1 inch. If your settings are metric, then set to 2.5 cm.
