Re: Quick question about the contest rule 5?

I had a similar question, so thanks to all for clarifying. My follow-up question: I'm starting to submit seriously to pro markets (wish me luck!) and I was wondering when Rule #5 kicks in (should I be so lucky...). What if: I submit a story to WOTF contest while, at the same time, submitting OTHER ...

Re: Number of Published Finalists

Hermione, I am definitely not the first PF to win the contest later. But I am the first in a long time. Eric James Stone and Floris (can’t recall his last name) were both PFs and then winners the following year about fifteen years ago. They were the last before me. Remember when you are PF you are s...

Re: Number of Published Finalists

Cool! KD, I believe that you are the most experienced among all forumites. I bet it was a wonderful experience, being a published finalist! Did the published finalists receive a trophy and give a speech at the gala? Dustin posted a link but yes, you do! It’s the whole experience just the same as fo...

Re: Number of Published Finalists

There could be several factors here. Most importantly probably is story length. If all 12 winners have very short stories, the volume will feel thin. Then they'll want to add another story or two to give readers good value for money. Conversely, if the winners write long there's no room for a publis...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

So, Dave has said many times the way to win WOTF is to make the judges cry. That's certainly easier with a sad ending than a happy one. However, I think if you look at them many WOTF winning stories may have sad endings in that a character dies or looses something precious, but they usually still wi...

Re: Uncle Moon Wants YOU!

The Writers of the Future Forum are the best place for entrants to congregate. I value the camaraderie and shared wisdom there from other entrants and past winners both. It's turned the Contest into a real community for me. I've made friends, cheered wins, mourned losses, and found story swap partne...

Cliff Winnig. Does anyone know him personally? This was his fifth NWF (Non-winning Finalist). He has 3 semi-finalists. Damn. Wow, I don't know him but I sure as heck know how he feels. Damn. The plus-5 club is exclusive, and uncomfortable. Founding member Scott Parkin, current record holder KD Juli...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

Screaming for days Congratulations!!!!!! I would love to hear more about that small but crucial change! So after I got the original HM, a year ago, I submitted the piece to a pro magazine. I didn't get in, obviously, but the editor kindly took a minute to tell me where he had faltered in the story....

I have permission to announce! wotf059 wotf059 I got third place. Joni called me Monday and I’m still glowing. It feels so darn good to finally get the win. This piece was an HM a year ago. I made a small but crucial change, lopped 10% out of the first couple pages, and now it hits all the right not...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

Thanks for the good wishes! I am hoping this is the one, for sure! This story was a reworked HM -- I submitted it elsewhere and got a personal rejection with one line of feedback that showed me what needed to be fixed, so I trimmed 12% of the word count and tried again.

Wen I'm feeling down I turn to Stewart Baker's history for inspiration: R, R, R, R, HM, R, R, R, R, Winner (1st place). Or Tina Gower: R, R, R, Winner (Golden Pen). Am I wrong, or did Tina get an R the quarter after her win? Whereas my trajectory is like: HM, HM, F, HM, HM, HM, F, R, F, HM, Hm.... ...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

Because a finalist gets feedback it becomes disqualified if it’s not a winner, Maybe SFs too. I can't recall if they get feedback from the judges. Actually SFs get feedback not finalists. Finalist stories are considered publishable and as such don’t need feedback but they are disqualified for resub...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

In that email, Joni did very clearly say “if you’re wondering about Q1, I’m sending out results next Tuesday.” As those who have been submitting to the contest for a while know, Joni has been known to be relatively optimistic with how quickly results will come. However, I haven’t ever seen her give...

My WOTF workshop 24 hour story, "The Eyes of Hemshat", is available now at Abyss & Apex. Fun fact: it was actually about 1k words longer when I wrote it (in 24 hours) and was definitely the longest story written my year.

You can use Times New Roman if you prefer, I believe Dave has said that he either prefers it or is fine with it. Use italics, not underlines. That's definitely preferred, regardless of what SMF may say.

Re: Volume 36 Workshop and Gala Postponed

A lot of the judges are in or approaching the more vulnerable age categories. It's good that they're not being asked to choose between their health and their devotion to mentoring the next generation of writers, but oh, how frustrating for you winners. I'm so sorry this happened in your year!

Re: Is a fantasy story without an ending/solution that involves fantasy wrong?

I didn't hear the podcast but is it possible you are conflating "fantasy" with "magic"? That is, if my fantasy story ends with a sword duel, how would you classify that? What if the solution is human ingenuity but it so entirely springs from my fantasy culture as to be inseparabl...

Happy with that result for this story. It's a revised HM from a year ago, and I'll take the result as a sign I fixed the problems I set out to fix.

Huge congrats to Peony, and wow! to all the HMs and SHMs this time. Well done!
