Re: Manuscript format question

You can use Times New Roman if you prefer, I believe Dave has said that he either prefers it or is fine with it. Use italics, not underlines. That's definitely preferred, regardless of what SMF may say.

Re: Volume 36 Workshop and Gala Postponed

A lot of the judges are in or approaching the more vulnerable age categories. It's good that they're not being asked to choose between their health and their devotion to mentoring the next generation of writers, but oh, how frustrating for you winners. I'm so sorry this happened in your year!

Re: Is a fantasy story without an ending/solution that involves fantasy wrong?

I didn't hear the podcast but is it possible you are conflating "fantasy" with "magic"? That is, if my fantasy story ends with a sword duel, how would you classify that? What if the solution is human ingenuity but it so entirely springs from my fantasy culture as to be inseparabl...

Re: Cursing and Sexual Situations in WOTF Stories?

Hi fellow Apex Writer! I recommend cutting out the sex and cursing. Consider it an editing exercise - figure out a way to make your story stronger while removing the possible stumbling blocks. I recently submitted a piece that made Finalist at WOTF over to Deep Magic (I published over there last sum...

wotf056

Happy with that result for this story. It's a revised HM from a year ago, and I'll take the result as a sign I fixed the problems I set out to fix.

Huge congrats to Peony, and wow! to all the HMs and SHMs this time. Well done!

*whispers* my email notification came in at 11:46pm EST last quarter. ACK!!! *faints dead away* *phone rings* I'm not dead. I'm right here. I've got it. Yes? Joni? *angrily hangs up on telemarketer number 352* The real question: does Joni call finalists on the weekend? Yes, she definitely does. I'v...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

You know what I hate about this time in the contest cycle? "No Caller ID" calls that get my pulse racing. In the last few years all my spam calls have been faked numbers, and the "No Caller ID" is Joni, so I got really really excited when the Publishers' Clearinghouse guy called ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

I think I'll be getting in, with a revised story from last year. I'm not a huge fan of resubmitting but all my new words have been going to a novel, and I do think I strengthened it considerably. I took 1k words off an 8k story, mostly from scene 1. I've had feedback from several sources that my sho...

Several have been published! You can probably find links on this forum if you look around.... the 24-hour story I wrote during the v32 workshop is slated to be published in Abyss & Apex next year sometime. I did tighten up the opener a good bit but it's fundamentally the same story I wrote.

I thought I saw this mentioned in some other thread but I wanted to confirm. Can you revise a previously entered story and enter it in another quarter if it wasn't a winner? Does it matter if it was an Honorable Mention? You absolutely can re-enter any story that earned less than a SF. Finalist sto...

I sold my one SHM from this contest to InterGalactic Medicine Show - after an R&R request. The editor there, like Dave, felt the story needed just a little something. Both of them were right, and the resulting story came out great. The only story I have resubmitted to this contest was an outrigh...

I meant that Andrew and Wulf's stories were both in present tense, not first person! I haven't had my caffeine yet this morning. I'm guessing that's what they were referring to. Having read the anthology, in my highly biased opinion Wulf's story was the only one that needed to be present tense. I do...

Anyone listen to the latest podcast with Dave, Tim Powers, and OSC? They talked about judging for "this quarter." Do we think that's q1? If so, there was a little hint that a story told in present tense did well. Commence twitching. If it was Q4, the winning piece by Andrew Dykstal and th...
