It's been three weeks now since the first results were announced. I'm twitching for our forumite finalists. Hopefully you guys hear back really really soon! Crossing my fingers for you! Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Well, here goes. Hi, my name is Kim, and I found out about Writers of the Future a few months ago. I haven't submitted yet, but I've got a story in the works right now (which I really should be working on...) that I intend to get in for the end of this current quarter. After that, it is my intentio...

Re: Contest Questions

I thought I saw this mentioned in some other thread but I wanted to confirm. Can you revise a previously entered story and enter it in another quarter if it wasn't a winner? Does it matter if it was an Honorable Mention? You absolutely can re-enter any story that earned less than a SF. Finalist sto...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I sold my one SHM from this contest to InterGalactic Medicine Show - after an R&R request. The editor there, like Dave, felt the story needed just a little something. Both of them were right, and the resulting story came out great. The only story I have resubmitted to this contest was an outrigh...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I meant that Andrew and Wulf's stories were both in present tense, not first person! I haven't had my caffeine yet this morning. I'm guessing that's what they were referring to. Having read the anthology, in my highly biased opinion Wulf's story was the only one that needed to be present tense. I do...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Anyone listen to the latest podcast with Dave, Tim Powers, and OSC? They talked about judging for "this quarter." Do we think that's q1? If so, there was a little hint that a story told in present tense did well. Commence twitching. If it was Q4, the winning piece by Andrew Dykstal and th...

Do they leave a message if you miss the phone call? Or if you're like me, probably 19/20 phone calls are from spam or robots, so I never answer the phone unless I know the number. She'll leave a message. Also, for me, her calls show up as "Caller Unknown" and these days all the spammers s...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Yeah, I think last quarter only took 2 weeks (or less really for the winners. Pretty sure I got my 'not a winner' call AFTER Moon. And how long ago did Dave say his part was done?). BUT that's quarter 4, where everyone is scrambling to get things finished for the anthology and whatnot. Could be. Co...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

It occurred to me last night that, if Dave finished his job last week as he said, they would not wait on Joni to do her thing. They would go ahead with final judging. So we may get the whole kit and caboodle this week, winners and all. I think final judging takes awhile. It was about a month betwee...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Back to legality, I wonder if using the same characters in different stories for two quarter entries is okay. Can anyone field this question? There's nothing at all in the rules about it. So you're clear there. If the story doesn't do better than an HM then I see absolutely no issue with using the ...

I just read the interview that Preston did with May S. Ruiz. Ruiz says Preston is vying for the Golden Pen Award with his story. Are all winning writers eligible for the Golden Pen? Get your Q2s in! You still have two days, but don't wait until the 31st, get them in now!

If you "only have a flash and it's dark and not the stuff WOTF wants", enter anyway! You don't know what will take the judge's fancy, and better a long-shot than no entry at all.

Re: Grounds for Disqualification

On a different kind of disqualification--I've seen mentions of stories getting disqualified. Why would that be? 1. author already a pro? 2. story already published? 3. plagiarism? 4. story was ghost-written? All those would be reasons. Also if it doesn't meet word count, or has inappropriate langu...

I hate to say it but that's just a form email. The only specific feedback given is to the Semifinalists, who get a critique from Dave about why their stories didn't quite make Finalist. Everything else is just a form letter.

For those of us who have only gotten a rejection how do we know what we are doing wrong? Writing a fresh story and making the same mistakes over and over again won't really help us get any better. It actually will, because every time you write you improve. You should be reading, too, and reading wi...

(because everything even up to SF is still a rejection) Non-winning Finalist is a rejection too. Just a really, really high level one. And that's ok! This contest only publishes three stories a quarter, out of hundreds or thousands of entries. All we can do is make sure to get ours in and have it b...
