Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

I'm throwing a hail Mary as well. Currently I'm 3/4 this year and would like to be 4/4. 5k words in. Three scenes left. Gahhhhh! I'm also very pregnant. Due date was yesterday. WOTF due date looming. Pretty sure I'll be writing/editing in the hospital room lol... Let's do this thing! (Even if it's ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

When do you think we will see results for this quarter? Q3 results look like they will drop in october. Is there any hope for december or are we looking at january? I'm pretty sure they'll want to get results ASAP. Remember, they need Q4 done so the book can be laid out and printed in time for the ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

Oh, long stories definitely win and get published! V31 has Sharon Joss's story that pushes the length requirements pretty hard: I think Darci Stone's V34 piece is similarly long, and my V32 PF was almost 15k, so.... go for it, if the story is good!

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

I've noticed there tends to be a relatively low number of stories that make it into the anthology every year that are alternate world fantasy. At least more recently. It seems most fantasy I see as winners in the contest lately tend to be some blend of modern/contemporary/urban fantasy. I know alte...

Dave's conducting a workshop in England this week, I believe, so I wouldn't expect any results for a while from him - but our intrepid first reader's pass might go out soon! Remember we have two sets of twitching to worry about now.

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

Hi all. A quick question for off of you that have been published in the WOTF annual books. How different was your original story from the final published version? Did you find your stories required a lot of polishing/revision/editing? Or were there only minimal polishing edits??? (I'm gaging the st...

You'll want to check with Joni, but I believe it would be "sold more than 5000 copies of a single ebook". So if you have 50 books and each has 100 sales you're still good. And I believe it has to be sales, not give-aways.

All three winners get a very nice trophy, at the big award ceremony every year. They get flown out to LA for a workshop and a big gala and recieve their trophy. The Golden Pen award is between the four first-place winners in a year. All the WOTF judges read their stories and vote one the grand prize...

I think this is great news for the contest, as fast as it's been growing. Kary is a wonderful person to help Dave read the thousands of entries every quarter. So exciting! Re: Hooked on the Dragon

I bet someone has! There are plenty of writers who dictate their stories. Kevin J. Anderson, prolific writer and WOTF judge, dictates his (though not with dragon). And I believe our own Martin Shoemaker dictates his, but maybe not with Dragon? I think he records himself and then transcribes later. W...

I got an email from "galaxypress" with an email domain of wizehive.com addressed to "Dear Entrant" and telling me that my story earned honorable mention in the 2nd quarter. I did in fact enter a story in WOTF this past quarter, so it could be legit! But since this is the first t...

I don't resubmit. Writing a new story generally is going to improve your craft more than sweating over edits to an old one.

That said, Dave has said that an SHM essentially means the story just needs one more pass / a couple fixes to reach Finalist status, and you're certainly welcome to resub!

The rules are for "more than three short stories," etc, in a professional publication, ie one that pays at least 6 cents a word and has a circulation of (I think > 5000?). A lot of people have a nice string of very reputable semi-pro publications, that is, in venues that pay less than 6 ce...

So every story submitted gets entered into the contest. They all get judged by the first round judge, who "grades" them - most stories will get a rejection. They just weren't there yet! Some will get an "Honorable Mention" - they're good stories, the judge read them all the way t...

Re: Acceptable level of violence for contest entry?

IWhat always worried me were the requirements around profanity. I actually stripped all the profanity out of my Q2 (and thought it weakened the story) but what I read later suggested that I might not have needed to do that. Darn it. It turns out I have 46 swear-words in my Q2 entry (out of 51 pages...
