Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Pulled out my Q1 yesterday, read it over, added 600 words to the first scene to try to improve the start. I like this story. Closer to my usual fare than my Q4 was. Husband and I will work on editing it tonight, to get to our crit group for next week. I might have to try to find some forum crit swap...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Our late, lamented Dr. Phil scored everything but a win, including a Published Finalist. I kept rooting for him for that win. He could've been published far more, but his teaching was too important to him. Fiction had to fit around that. Dr. Phil was special. I wish he'd gotten that win, but he lef...

SHM. That rounds out my set of responses from WOTF with at least one in each category, except, of course, "Winner". Maybe next year!

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Being a newb to this contest, I have a question: Do most folks typically submit a story for the next quarter before learning the results of the current judging round? I have some more in the pipeline but wasn't sure if I should wait until I receive a "thumbs down." Definitely go ahead and...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

RSchibler is correct on both points. I believe last year they were trying to get things finished up earlier than the year before (for v32, Q4 finalists were notified Christmas Eve and the winners didn't get notified til mid-January, then I got the PF notification in early February, which made things...

Re: Go for the novel? Or stick with the short story?

Why not try doing NaNoWriMo in November? If by some chance you haven't heard of it, check out NaNoWriMo.org, but it's essentially a challenge to "write a book in November". Granted they define "book" as "50,000 words" which is fairly short for a novel, but it's a ton of...

Does a published finalist get the whole week? Or just the Gala. (if the whole week, maybe I'd rather have one or two of those first!) Also -- how does the published finalist get picked? Trivia question: anyone ever have two, or more, stories in the same book? The whole week! You are a winner in eve...

Reading through vol 33, I'm surprised by the short length of these stories. I might even call it a trend... Yeah, it is interesting. I feel like the overall story length was a lot longer in last year's anthology. *REST OF COMMENT REDACTED DUE TO PARANOIA ABOUT ANONYMITY* I recently friended Dave on...

Re: How Short Is Too Short?

I'm pretty sure the shortest WOTF winning story is "The Disambiguation of Captain Shroud" by Gary Shockley. I don't have the book in front of me, but if I remember correctly, it's like two-three pages. It's definitely a flash piece. It won first place. An even shorter flash story is a fin...

With what I was working on for Q4 being (not-quite-but-close-to) hopelessly broken. I took this inspiration and rather than skip this quarter, got something in that feels not too shabby. And that gives me enough time to fix what's wrong with the other one. Fantastic! That's the reason I put in my Q...

Good going! If we're writing, we've got trunk stories. Let Dave be the judge. If you don't have a story in, there's no way you can win. Yeah, so, that Q3 finalist I just had? Trunk story. Well, not quite, but "story I haven't touched in a year, pulled out and polished up" counts, right?
