Re: Publication Limit?

The rules are for "more than three short stories," etc, in a professional publication, ie one that pays at least 6 cents a word and has a circulation of (I think > 5000?). A lot of people have a nice string of very reputable semi-pro publications, that is, in venues that pay less than 6 ce...

Re: Contest Rejections?

So every story submitted gets entered into the contest. They all get judged by the first round judge, who "grades" them - most stories will get a rejection. They just weren't there yet! Some will get an "Honorable Mention" - they're good stories, the judge read them all the way t...

Hey, is it time to twitch for Q2 yet?

I've had missing words in finalist pieces. It's not a fun feeling when you spot them but it doesn't automatically disqualify you from making finalist! Now, winning on the other hand...

Re: Acceptable level of violence for contest entry?

IWhat always worried me were the requirements around profanity. I actually stripped all the profanity out of my Q2 (and thought it weakened the story) but what I read later suggested that I might not have needed to do that. Darn it. It turns out I have 46 swear-words in my Q2 entry (out of 51 pages...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

I believe Dave tends to select one story in 8 or so subgenres as finalist each quarter - one epic fantasy, one contemporary, one space opera, etc. Those go to the quarter judges, who pick their favorites out of the 8. The top 3 are then the winners of the quarter. So if the judges in each quarter pr...

This is a great list for enjoyment. It makes me cry because I like most of what's on it a lot better than most of what's being published today. My tastes are so dated. I would add, anyone who is reading through this for a sort of history of the genre, put C.L Moore on your list. Her "Northwest ...

Re: What's a Silver Honorable Mention as opposed to a regular HM?

Dave mentioned recently (at a convention) that SHM are often stories that need just one more pass by the author to tighten or fix things, in order to bring them up to Finalist quality. He definitely encouraged re-submissions of SHMs after that work is done.
