Re: V34 Q1 Analysis and Discussion

I've seen other places say explicitly that they will measure the word count themselves using Word's word count to make it the same for everybody. So, perhaps when a contract is offered, you can ask how they determine word count.

Re: V34 Q1 Analysis and Discussion

While scouring The Story Doctor website, which features many of Dave's writing tips, I came across an interesting checklist Dave composed that he used to use. Here's a link: https://mystorydoctor.com/12588-2/ . Talk about extensive. I started reading not realizing how in-depth it was and finished w...

Re: V34 Q1 Analysis and Discussion

While Dave's kicks are good, he is just one man. It's nice to get another person's opinion, especially since we plan to sell stories to more than just him. :) It's taken a long time for me to get past HM. It's one thing to hear about the items to work on. It's another to recognize it in a different ...

I have a first draft. It is a mess. I'm going to try to do another quick draft on it before diving into final edits on Q3.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

Notifications tend to come in big waves - you'll see a dozen or so announcements here or on grinder over the course of a day.

Ever since Dave said he was starting on Q2 stories right away, I've been eagerly waiting for results, though mostly I try to focus on my next story. Mostly.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 34

I have mine at the tail end of the queue in critters now. It's going to make it a tight turnaround next month, but at least it's on the short end, so I'm hoping its doable. I could try for mpc, but that will just save me a week...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 34

I'm in the same boat, wanting my Q2 to win more than my Q1. Though part of that is due to the fact that I can't submit my Q2 to as many places as the Q1 story.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

I was going to send one other out to BCS but according to my cover letter for it I had sent that story to them but must not have listed it. Is there anyway to check on what stories we sent them???? Search your sent e-mail for the submission. Since their auto-reply doesn't list the story's name, tha...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

I've had a hard time motivating myself to revise my story. Perhaps its because I'm trying a different method, more inline editing instead of just rewriting the whole thing. That way I can focus on one issue at a time. Next pass: theme!

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 33

And of course the critique promptly arrives. Fortunately no major changes suggested. One issue was raised over which I'd be interested to hear other views. If you're attempting to tell a story from the viewpoint of a character with certain perceptual limitations (in this case autism), are you justi...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

The story I'm submitting this Q has already earned 2 HMs here. I don't quite remember the changes I made first time around except that I cut the first 3,000 words and started somewhere else to have it give the right promises to the reader. This time around, I redid the beginning, and completely redi...

Just got a reply to my query! I'm not finding your last name or the title of your story in any files on the computer. Did you send it via e-mail perhaps? I print those off, but I wanted to check with you first. Guess my query wasn't detailed enough, so I'm still in NNINN. Still, good to know that sh...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 33

I don't see anything that says they aren't eligible (in fact, I had a few WOTF stories on my Hugo nominating ballot this year). I assume more that it's just not as wide read as the big magazines (F&SF, Clarkesworld). The short stories list especially has a very long tail of stories that are nomi...

Yes, we want to be professional, but there are protocols for lost submissions. Query once at an appropriate time. Now that finalists should be notified is an appropriate time. Then wait for a time, I believe a month is appropriate. That's why I changed my mind to wait until September to send elsewhe...
