4400 word alternate history/fantasy exchange
I think the subject says it all. I'm happy to trade crits. It doesn't bother me if your story is longer than mine.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
Hey folks, Got a personal R today, and I'm not quite sure how to interpret it. Some of you who have more experience with the editorial side of things might be able to help me. Here's the text of the e-mail: I really did like this, just not quite enough to buy it. My main problem was that the opening...

My humble contribution to this thread:
"Adroit" in the Theian Journal.
My list is short, but I'm proud of it. It's my first sale. More to come.

Yeah, Tor takes forever. It's normal. As a $0.25/word market for short fiction, I guess it's their right.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
So, this story that is, to use an acronym I picked up from Ishmael, TBTIEW (the best thing I've ever written), keeps getting personal rejections along the lines of, "I like the story, but it doesn't fit here." Well where the heck does the stupid thing fit? (By stupid thing I mean work of i...

Re: Five Minute Rant
Alice, my guess would be something like, "Kick-ass idea, but it fell short somewhere in the execution. But I'd love to see more of your kick-ass ideas in the hopes that next time you execute better." But it's just a guess. I have even less information to go on than you. And yeah, that &quo...

Re: Anyone know about Neoverse writing competition?
I'm in for this one. Took the plunge. It was easy choosing which story to submit: the only one I've ever written under 5,000 words. (Well, the only spec fic under 5,000, anyway).

Re: Five Minute Rant
Hey, editors! Don't start rejection letters with the word "congratulations!" I understand you're trying to engage in a polite and positive interaction with me, and I appreciate that, but some of us crave publication success badly enough that it gives us fragile psyches okay? Damn, that mes...

I hadn't heard of it. It looks good, though. Even if the video does look and sound like I'm getting recruited for a cult.

Re: Five Minute Rant
Argh! Why can I write a 7,000 word story that I'm in love with, but can't come up with two or three words for a title that I don't despise? Someone should start a service where you can send them a story, and they'll come up with an awesome title for it. I would be their best customer.

I've been head down in my novel -- almost done 71,000 words out of an estimated 80,000.
Also a success worth celebrating. Well done, Bob!

I'm down for a swap. I think mine is about 6k (don't have it in front of me). Contemporary fantasy. Email me yours, and I'll send mine.
I probably won't have a chance to read until the weekend.

Had one go to round 2 at Futuristica. That was eventually rejected, so I sent a 2nd one. Rejected at the first tier. Oh well.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
Well, got the higher tier rejection letter from Sheila Williams at Asimov's. "Thank you for letting me see [story]. The story is nicely done, but I'm afraid it's not quite right for me. I look forward to your next one, though." Not quite a win, but my fragile psyche will chalk it up as a p...
