4400 word alternate history/fantasy exchange

I think the subject says it all. I'm happy to trade crits. It doesn't bother me if your story is longer than mine.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 33

I submitted a few to Tor.com back when one could. I don't remember exact wait times, but it was always long. I'd say 8 months is within the normal range there. It's long as hell, but hey, they pay $0.25 per word, so they sort of buy the right to take as long as they want. That said, I don't think a ...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Hey folks, Got a personal R today, and I'm not quite sure how to interpret it. Some of you who have more experience with the editorial side of things might be able to help me. Here's the text of the e-mail: I really did like this, just not quite enough to buy it. My main problem was that the opening...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 33

So I'm in. I wanted to be first, but I see Ishmael already beat me.

I'm not actually early, when you consider this is my Q2 story that I didn't finish in time.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 33

Well, I didn't get my story finished up in time for Q2. Just finished my draft 1 today, so I guess I'll get this one in for Q3. Got some pretty hot stuff (like awesome stuff, not sexy stuff) in this story. It excites me. Of course, that's how I feel about every story I write that gets rejected, so t...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 33

I'm in a similar boat, Peony. Just haven't come up with a 3rd act to do the first 2 acts justice. I've got something servicable in my head, but it's lackluster. Doesn't make me say, "Damn, that's awesome," like my first two acts did.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

Don't get too worked up about it; I'm going to win this quarter, anyway. Nevermind my string of 10 or so rejections (and 1 HM before them, I'll have you know). THIS is definitely the one. You guys can have a shot next quarter. J/k. I just wish they would send my R now so I can send it on to the next...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

last quarter's rejection did a lot to ease the tension for me this quarter simply because I now have more realistic expectations.

Yeah, the last 2 or 3 years of straight rejections have done that for me as well.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

So, this story that is, to use an acronym I picked up from Ishmael, TBTIEW (the best thing I've ever written), keeps getting personal rejections along the lines of, "I like the story, but it doesn't fit here." Well where the heck does the stupid thing fit? (By stupid thing I mean work of i...

Alice, my guess would be something like, "Kick-ass idea, but it fell short somewhere in the execution. But I'd love to see more of your kick-ass ideas in the hopes that next time you execute better." But it's just a guess. I have even less information to go on than you. And yeah, that &quo...

I'm in for this one. Took the plunge. It was easy choosing which story to submit: the only one I've ever written under 5,000 words. (Well, the only spec fic under 5,000, anyway).

Hey, editors! Don't start rejection letters with the word "congratulations!" I understand you're trying to engage in a polite and positive interaction with me, and I appreciate that, but some of us crave publication success badly enough that it gives us fragile psyches okay? Damn, that mes...

Thanks for the link, s_c. I don't have any novellas, but I've got a stack of superhero shorts for them that haven't found a home yet.
