4400 word alternate history/fantasy exchange

I think the subject says it all. I'm happy to trade crits. It doesn't bother me if your story is longer than mine.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Hey folks, Got a personal R today, and I'm not quite sure how to interpret it. Some of you who have more experience with the editorial side of things might be able to help me. Here's the text of the e-mail: I really did like this, just not quite enough to buy it. My main problem was that the opening...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

Don't get too worked up about it; I'm going to win this quarter, anyway. Nevermind my string of 10 or so rejections (and 1 HM before them, I'll have you know). THIS is definitely the one. You guys can have a shot next quarter. J/k. I just wish they would send my R now so I can send it on to the next...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

last quarter's rejection did a lot to ease the tension for me this quarter simply because I now have more realistic expectations.

Yeah, the last 2 or 3 years of straight rejections have done that for me as well.

Yeah, I'm in. It's a trunk story with a new ending, but who knows? Stranger things have happened, right?

I don't know about you folks, but this week is feeling sort of Thurdayish to me. Duck!

My approach to submitting is "Always Enter Everything." I'll be in for the 2nd year for this one. (I HM'ed last year).

My humble contribution to this thread:

"Adroit" in the Theian Journal.

My list is short, but I'm proud of it. It's my first sale. More to come.

Yeah, Tor takes forever. It's normal. As a $0.25/word market for short fiction, I guess it's their right.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

So, this story that is, to use an acronym I picked up from Ishmael, TBTIEW (the best thing I've ever written), keeps getting personal rejections along the lines of, "I like the story, but it doesn't fit here." Well where the heck does the stupid thing fit? (By stupid thing I mean work of i...

Re: Five Minute Rant

Alice, my guess would be something like, "Kick-ass idea, but it fell short somewhere in the execution. But I'd love to see more of your kick-ass ideas in the hopes that next time you execute better." But it's just a guess. I have even less information to go on than you. And yeah, that &quo...

Re: Anyone know about Neoverse writing competition?

I'm in for this one. Took the plunge. It was easy choosing which story to submit: the only one I've ever written under 5,000 words. (Well, the only spec fic under 5,000, anyway).

Re: Five Minute Rant

Hey, editors! Don't start rejection letters with the word "congratulations!" I understand you're trying to engage in a polite and positive interaction with me, and I appreciate that, but some of us crave publication success badly enough that it gives us fragile psyches okay? Damn, that mes...

I hadn't heard of it. It looks good, though. Even if the video does look and sound like I'm getting recruited for a cult.

Re: Five Minute Rant

Argh! Why can I write a 7,000 word story that I'm in love with, but can't come up with two or three words for a title that I don't despise? Someone should start a service where you can send them a story, and they'll come up with an awesome title for it. I would be their best customer.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

Overhauling an old story. New ending, cleaned up the writing, changed a plot point or two to support the ending. Basically updating it with what I've learned as a writer since writing it a few years ago. I think I'll submit it for Q1. I like the story and think I can do it better justice now than I ...
