And I mean, geez, wasn't that quick? This is more than a month sooner than I expected a response.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 38

My favourite method, when I can do it, is to complete my first draft in the first month, work on something completely different during the second month, and then do final edits in the month ahead of the deadline, as that helps me come at the edits with more objectivity. It doesn't always quite work ...

Sure, I'd be happy to pass it over for you to take a look at. :-) I subbed it out elsewhere this morning after receiving the result, but I'll send a copy your way shortly.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 38

I'm resting, to let myself take a breath and deal with some life stuff, but I have five story ideas sketched out to select from--I'm not sure if any one would be the stand-out winner, but at least I won't be without a way forwards as October advances. Also hoping to brainstorm a few more to add to t...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

And, submitted! Incidentally, I am finding that out-loud reading of stories can really take a toll on the voice. My throat is still sore from yesterday. This was an unexpected development, and gives me a new-found respect for the work my friend does when he's recording audiobooks! However, it did un...

And fiiiiinally to the point of print-and-read-out-loud. I haven't done this for a while, and I'm cutting it a little tight, but I'm hoping this will let me see if the story has any fundamental problems that I can quickly fix, or if there are any easy rough edges that I can buff away. I'm sure there...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

I got to spend a large chunk of yesterday on my editing--a rare freedom for me of late, and one that I took full advantage of. I now have a finished draft that I would feel okay about submitting, if I ran out of time, and managed to knock the word-count down by about 1500 words, mostly by eliminatin...

Re: Goals four V.38!

My rejections were solidly on about 60-80 per year for four years (I only passed 100 rejections in one year, 2015), until my job situation crumbled and left us near-bankrupt, and I had to scramble. Since then, my job and finance situation got considerably better, but with it, my stress and hours wen...

Re: Goals four V.38!

Get 40 rejections I love this goal--I set out, a long time ago, with the goal of getting a hundred rejections, because I noticed that I was taking individual rejections pretty hard (so that it kept squashing my enthusiasm for writing), and I knew that I needed to toughen my mental skin. I'm closer ...

Re: Goals four V.38!

I'm trying to get mentally ahead for this, and have my fall-back plans for V.38 sketched out now -- completing one story that I took half-way for a WotF entry previously, one new story that I have the concept written for, and two possible stories that are essentially near complete rewrites of older ...

I think I'm game for this myself, too--four new stories next year sounds like just where I need to be going. I have some things that I'd like to work with for them, too--one story, and one new approach to brainstorming new short story ideas. Curious to see how it all pans out...

I'm feeling a great sense of relief about that now! I was starting to feel like this would slip and not make the Q, because without that feeling right, I didn't want it to push it out. Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

Doctor Jest, how did your cat feel about your decision? Just kidding . Don't know if its apropos to your short story, but in a screenplay, I try to accomplish TWO climaxes – a boom; then when least expected, a more powerful boom. I don't get copyright credit on this one; a while ago, a brilliant sc...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 37

I've really been struggling with mine -- I really liked the story and almost everything in it, including the ending, but the climax immediately prior to that ending felt sorely lacking to me. Not in that it lacked for drama, or that the events were wrong, but...just that somehow it wasn't delivering...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

I just realised my Q2 HM was only a third draft. How many drafts do people do generally? For me, my most major revisions come if I have an idea that significantly deepens the story overall. I also tend to have scenes I couldn't write properly the first time through (I suppose filling those in might...

Some of what I do, I already do well -- some, not so well, and some...

Longtime board lurker here, feeling the stress this week and making an account. I don't have very high hopes for my first WotF entry, but even so, the butterflies are still there. David's latest tip scared me, but an earlier one had given me great hope, so now it's canceled out, I guess. I'm almost...

Re: Do the judges receive print or electronic copies of the stories to review?

It's not directly related to this, as WotF had shifted to electronic by the time I first submitted, but I do sometimes miss the process of printing and mailing in stories to a market. It felt like an event, to print, pack, and then go out to mail the submission in. Still have my handful of collecte...

Thanks! I was able to submit to Q3 as well, but I am far less confident in that story than my Q2 submission. I'm dying to hear the results.
