Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

Glib Wizard, the British would be appalled at a reference to "fanny pack." It does not mean the same thing in the United Kingdom. "Fanny" refers to a part of the female anatomy. The best reference book on the subject is The U.K. to U.S.A. Dictionary British English to American E...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

Not being American comes with a certain disadvantage when it comes to word choice. Just found out a word I used in my story has racist connotations in the USA, yet in Australia it's seen as innocent. =( I've run into some similar things myself. The one that stands out is, where I grew up (England),...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

Darnit, the Wizehive form is reporting that it's closed for Q3 -- I suspect an error, maybe just the wrong date set up for it. I've dropped an email over to Joni, hopefully it'll be fixed in time for me to submit tomorrow before the deadline.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

I've slipped behind, and won't quite make it in for this quarter. A bunch of little things killed my momentum and energy, so while I'm close, I'm going to look to punt this back, get it ready for Q4, and then get an early start on my next Q1. Do you have an older story you might be able to polish u...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

Old timers are awesome, though. I look forward to being one, eventually, with a view to hopefully being an old timer who has something that they actually did and can give decent advice about, rather than sitting in the corner, muttering about how I coulda been a contendah while sipping grocery-store...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

I still think you can do it!! I only wrote 1100 words in April and then rounded out my first draft a little less than a month later with 4700 words. Though I understand the feeling... each quarter (only 2 so far) I've thought long and hard about maybe just entering my current piece next quarter so ...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

Like Pumpkin said--don't sweat it if you're moving at a different pace. Try not to stress if things don't go according to plan; for me, at least, this year seems to defy all attempts at planning. Just do what you can, and know that simply finding time to put in the effort right now is a win. wotf00...

Blimey, you lot are putting me to shame this time around! I'm legitimately having difficulty keeping my head together, and my momentum seems utterly fragmented and stuttering. I'm putting in a rare shift of actually making some progress at the moment, but it's been a real struggle for me to keep thi...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

To our new members, don't forget about critique swaps. There's a place for this in another main topic. Best of success! I'd echo this -- I haven't made as much use of this as I might have, but when I have, the feedback I've received has been both insightful and helpful. (It's also why I rate market...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37

I've just started completely rewriting my Q3, after thinking about a number of things I've learned from one of Dave's online workshops. It doesn't change the story itself, and I may be able to lift some scenes from the first version unaltered, but it does change a lot of the character interactions ...

Likewise, I replied to her first email last month, but didn't get reply. Then, I received her 2nd email a few days ago asking for me to re-confirm. Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge!

My Aunt used to study books of scrabble words. She was lethal at that game when I was a kid. As an adult, I was still worse with words than some of my family, but would win because I had better game strategy on the board.

Speaking of Q3, did others get the email from Joni asking to reconfirm the response? Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I found the challenge a good way to just kick off a decent writing routine again. And writing new stories was definitely better to help me do that than editing or revising would have been. I'm not sure what I'm doing for the next cycle though. Tempting though this is, I think it'd be difficult to do...
