Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I found the challenge a good way to just kick off a decent writing routine again. And writing new stories was definitely better to help me do that than editing or revising would have been. I'm not sure what I'm doing for the next cycle though. Tempting though this is, I think it'd be difficult to do...

I'm not entirely sure what I am. A paddler? You are a platypus writer! Hard to categorize! wotf001 "A semiaquatic egg-laying mammal which frequents lakes and streams in eastern Australia. It has a sensitive pliable bill shaped like that of a duck, webbed feet with venomous spurs, and dense fur...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

Yeah, a lot of the paper sub markets were that way, both for short fiction and novel pitches. You could either provide a small envelope pre-paid for just the response, or a larger one if you wanted the whole manuscript back. I did the latter when it was difficult for me to print things like that, bu...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

After much hard work and some loss of sleep this past week, I'm in! Just watched the lady at the post office postmark it for today. Yay! Good luck everyone! Whoa, so retro! Actually, I always loved paper submissions. It gave the whole process of sending in a story a little bit of an event feel. But...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

I ran into what I thought were a couple of these auto-reject, story bloating sections this time around, and was feeling for sure I was steaming headlong into an R. I guess I did enough things right in the rest of it that those things were forgiven enough to earn an HM, though I wonder how it would f...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

This quarter is the one I'm strapping in to expect my first straight R for. I have so many issues with the opening that I really don't expect the readers to stick with it long enough.

On the up side, prime candidate for an edit or a rewrite...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

You could always do the revision, write a fresh story, and see which you like better when it comes time to submit? That's not a bad plan at all, and I think I may adopt it. I'm currently working on finishing up the fresh piece I set aside, and glaring at its multitude of faults and stumbles, but I'...

Re: A Word Re: Revisions

I'd echo that for sure -- or every "writers must do X" piece of advice out there, there'll be professional and successful writers out there doing the opposite (with the possible exception of "writers must write"). By and large, all the advice is just a bunch of clues and breadcru...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

My first entry for v37 is already queued up, as I set aside a story I didn't think I would fully do justice in the time I had left, and submitted another story in its place. I've yet to decide what to do with the other three entries though - I have a story I'd really like to revise and resubmit, but...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

My story is done, but I'm tinkering with the language choices in a couple of places to tighten the thematic points. I was tempted to submit already, but resisted the urge to do so until I've finished this pass properly, so more likely to submit early next week.

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

Of my six results to date, broadly speaking, two saw the hero succeed in goal and flunk the desire; two saw them succeed in goal and desire both; and two (both the silvers) saw them flunk both. I'll not comment on the pending ones, save to note that I actually don't yet have a story lined up for thi...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

I'm pivoting to an alternate story that I'm going to revise, one I've not submitted here before. I really like the story I've been working on, but don't think I can fully do it justice in the time I have left for this quarter. So I'm going to punt it to Q1 of v37 instead, and polish this other piece...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

I finally have a very rusty something-or-other that I am describing as my Draft 0.75. It's got holes in it, and some of the important elements from my draft 0.5 are missing and need transplanting in, but I'm happy -- I always feel pretty good once I reach this point of the story, where the skeleton ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

I have my rough draft about 85% complete, but the 15% in gaps are known, and don't trouble me. I expect them to fill out during the revision process now. It's in a muddled order though, and has two separately written openings. I'm currently toying with changing the opening POV to create a circular f...

Re: Revising an HM to make it a Winner

Thanks for this, Chuck -- I do think that both approaches have value to a writer. I find I get more personal benefit out of pushing to write new stories, on the whole, but I'll revisit and revise stories too from time to time. I've not yet submitted a revised piece to WotF[*], but I am already expec...

I am enthusiastic in my dislike of Moby Dick, though I did at least read it in its entirety. I like bits of it, but don't like the way it's written or structured overall. Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

The novel Inkheart was a ton of fun, and stands as one of my favourite books. I was a little disappointed that the movie never found enough of an audience, as I'd have liked to see the other two make it to the screen.

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36

Yeah, I can't do the write without edit thing. I tried it, and don't doubt some folks can, but my mind just doesn't work that way. I get my first version out, and in doing so, discover more about the story, its themes, ideas, and world, which I build on in my first revision; then my next is cleaning...

Re: Little confused about rule #5?

It's stated in an inclusive way, so you'd be looking at getting both that number of hits / issues AND that amount of payment per word. If you write a 10k story that gets printed or viewed a million times, but you only got paid a flat $100, although you might well be pissed off, it at least wouldn't ...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

Mine is coming together in dribs and drabs, a few hundred words here, a thousand there, and then days of nothing. I have the story in my head mostly, but it's flowing out in a decidedly erratic fashion. I'm enjoying it though, which I take to be a good sign.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

There's definitely a range here. My current running average for responses reports itself as 88 days, but that's based on my submission date versus response date, so needs tinkering. (Also, I only have six data-points so far, so this is all a bit limited.) Adjusting to look at the quarter cut-off dat...
