Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Terry Pratchett was so witty, every sentence was a play on words, and most of those sentences were hilarious. I felt that he was to humorous novels what Gary Larson was to comics. He spun world society like a top and gave us views from angles only he could identify, and we'd chuckle and say, you kn...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Humor typically has to get in and out quick to be funny (unless you're Terry Pratchett). The thing with Pratchett is, if you took out all the humour, it'd still be good. Not all humour writers do that, including a good many pretty successful ones. I think that's why it never feels like it overstaye...

And I'm in also, a fresh story for Q1!

I also have my outline for Q2 roughed out, so I'm ready to roll on the next one too...but I think I'll take a short break first.

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36

I'll be editing close to the deadline for Q1, but I already know the story I'll be writing for Q2. I have an outline already sketched, but it's very broad.

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Well that was an interesting experience! I just completed the first draft, and...well, it's not the story I expected it to be, even half way through, and I think that's a really good thing in the end. I'm curious to see how well it fares -- I normally give my work a lot more TLC in the weeks before ...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Yeah, I'm thinking there'll be no swaps for me this time around... :-D There is something about over-thinking a story. I've done that with the original idea a lot, but having put myself close to the deadline (I'm working on my first proper draft right this minute) I'm just writing it, and hell, whet...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I'm going to be trying a more wing-it approach to this submission. I do layer my stories a little, so the edit cycle has value, but I think it's definitely worth keeping in mind the energy of the first version -- I know when I've lost writing in the past and tried to reproduce it, I've never been ab...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

Thanks for this! This last point has just prompted a complete rewrite of my opening, but so far I like the new version a lot. I lose a lot of nice details from the original, but those don't necessarily add to the story anyway.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I understand about the stress of the deadline, but I think you can do it. I'm also willing to bet that your rewrites will be better than the previous draft, because that is how these things tend to go in my experience. If you get to a point where you're interested in and/or willing to trade critiqu...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I just looked over my draft, and realised that I have some major conceptual issues that are going to mean I'm about to do some massive rewrites of this story. I'll not get to keep a significant chunk of what I've done, but hey ho -- better than sticking with something that doesn't feel like it's nai...

Re: 4 in 36

Right -- Thanksgiving's down, and so it's time to get full steam into editing my Q1 submission. I have the bones of the story down, and my first edit sweep is some refinements, a whole lot of next-sweep edit notes, and essentially sanity-checking everything to make sure it still stands up... I'm pre...

The "when" being "when he didn't have a job and had loads of time to write".

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

I'm working on revising a story I'd started on, the front 450 of which I bounced off Dustin a while back. Got swept up in other things, but kept thinking about his feedback, and the resulting revision (killing a transition) restaged the story and made the whole premise a lot more interesting... So n...

I'd love to -- I just have to figure out which 450 I should be sending you...I have 3 stories right now. I may end up sending you all three! I've been ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 34

I'm itching to get back into this -- I was riding high, but then suddenly got dropped into the horror of trying to get a new job . I'm just about at the end of all that, though, and once it's over, I'll actually have some normal, human free time. And more to the point, I might have enough emotional ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 34

I'm finally finding my stride, at the end of a few crazy weeks -- the main question now is whether I can get this finished, polished, and critiqued in time to actually sub for this quarter. I'm going to give it a good ol' try, but I'd hoped to be further in than this by now.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

I doubt that'd be a crippling condition -- Steampunk lies somewhere between sci-fi and fantasy anyway, so as a genre it's a natural fit. If you do your best work in that genre, then I'd think you'd have the best chance of writing a winning story in it. And I would hope that at the end of the day, it...
