Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

aww, thanks. XD At least when rejections tell me about the things they didn't like, I have something to work on before resubmitting. But with these, there's nothing to go on. This and another story keep getting really close - including being shortlisted two or three times - so I know they're good, b...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

This one almost broke my heart; from Liminal: "The story is excellent, but it's not quite right for us. Thanks for the read -- I loved the emotional depth and complexity of this piece, and the multi-layered protagonists felt rounded and real." wotf017 This story has been getting a lot of s...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Got a 140 day personal from Interzone. :P He said he liked a lot of things about the story, but ultimately couldn't convince himself it was right for the magazine, and asked that I send more. Prior to this all I ever got from Interzone were form rejections after 1-2 days, so it's at least an improve...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Heh, yeah that's definitely way longer than mine. wotf007 The first one is from Inscription Magazine. On their Facebook page they say they've sent out all the clear rejections and any story still with them is still under consideration. They're a new mag that pays pro rates, so I'm happy I've gotten ...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Thanks everyone!

Yeah, it's really quick for them. I got my submission in right after they reopened in May, so I probably made it before manuscripts started piling up again.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

I just got the most amazing 28 day personal rejection from Cory Skerry at Tor.com for my latest submission. Among other things, it ended with: " Please send us more of your stories in the future. I would consider it a personal favor if you addressed your next cover letter to me so my co-workers...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

heh, thanks! Yeah... one said that in the end it just didn't fit in with the other stories they were publishing, even though she otherwise liked it a lot and held it for about a year. On the bright side, I revise every story after a rejection, and after 15+ revisions it's a much stronger piece now t...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

argh another rejection for this one story that's already gone through 15 rejections from pro markets. Half of those were personals, and it was held for further consideration three times before they changed their mind. So I know it has to be good, and that makes the constant rejections all the more f...

Thanks for the update!

The Submissions Grinder registers: "421 day Rejection, Form from Inscription on March 15"

That one's got to hurt. :(

Asimov's has gotten really fast

Lots of responses within a day or two, usually within a week. Any idea what happened there? New slush readers or something?

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Thanks! This is my 14th submission to DSF, and given that it was a flash piece I churned out in roughly 10 minutes I didn't expect it to get that far. XD Meanwhile, the stories I spend months or years crafting to perfection just gets me form rejections. I might need to revise my writing strategy. Ar...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

From the Masters Review: "We think highly of your writing and wish you the best of luck placing this elsewhere." Got another similar rejection from an anthology saying they'd held my writing for further consideration but eventually decided against it; and a high-tier rejection from CC Finl...

Re: F&SF has a new editor--and now does e-subs!

Yeah, I was wondering about that. I thought he might be one of those editors who give rejections if the first page doesn't hold them, but the high rate of personals suggested that he actually reads everything; and then I wondered if he had slushers, and if he doesn't... that's amazing, given how fas...

Re: F&SF has a new editor--and now does e-subs!

Awesome! I live all the way in Singapore on the other side of the planet (literally), and the printing + postage + waiting time just wasn't worth it with paper subs.

Re: Five Minute Rant

Anyway, there are more than 30 SFF pro markets around. Of course a particular story might not be well suited to all of them, but are you sure you checked all possibilities? Thanks! The word length is an issue - it's just over 6k, so all the flash markets are out. I realised I haven't tried Lightspe...

Re: Five Minute Rant

I've got a story that seems to be cursed. It first got shortlisted at Baen's Universe before they went defunct, and they said they were almost definitely going to publish it. Months later I got an email saying that they'd overestimated the number of pages available, had to cut one story, and it happ...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

I've had 5 form and 3 personal rejections from Strange Horizons since 2008; all three personals were this year. My writing seems to be at that aggravating stage where it's good enough to get lots of personal rejections from top magazines, but not good enough to actually get published by those magazi...

Inscription Magazine

Fairly new pro magazine. They recently closed for submissions, but will open again next year. Their focus is SFF for teenagers, up to 9k words at 6 cents per word. Response time is an average of 2 months, though works under consideration can take a lot longer (they've been holding on to one of mine ...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

I'm guessing it's a higher tier of standard rejection, if so. I know that Analog has at least two different standard rejections, one of which adds the line "I rather like your style of writing and suggest you try us again" - which I received both from Trevor and Stanley, word for word. But...

Re: Foreign payments

I learnt this the hard way. I'm in Singapore and usually getting payments from the US, and for the last one I requested wire transfer thinking (wrongly) that it would cost less than Paypal. I lost about $50 after the bank's fees and horrible exchange rate. I'm still sad about it.

Really? Awesome! The Grinder stats showed that they give personal rejections 36% of the time, but I didn't know how many of those were requests for more. That's definitely encouraging, thanks!

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Got a form rejection from Tor.com after 214 days. My previous submission there had been my first, which got a nice personal rejection after 146 days asking me to send more writing; so I had really high hopes this time. I thought I'd at least be guaranteed a personal rejection after 7 months of waiti...
