Tiered Rejections

Didn't realize that my Five Minute Rant would have quite so much interest. I wrote that after receiving a number of meaningless rejections. The old Hot and Cold game occurred to me as a - tongue in cheek - option for rejection standardization. YM Pang brought up its resemblance to the currently offe...

Hi Amy, I'd like to add a few names. The list is distinguished, but (My apologies to Mr. Power) light in a certain area. Those who like F&SF know them all. Andre Norton, Ursula K. Le Guin, Anne McCaffrey, Connie Willis, C.J. Cherryh, Jane Yolen. All named Grand Master of science fiction by the S...

Re: Can you recommend a writing teacher?

Hi Jason, You need to supply two important pieces of information. 1. At what level do you currently write? 10=Established author, 5=Unpublished and have attended a few workshops, 1=Enthusiastic, total noob. 2. Where do you want to go? Do you wish to support yourself completely with your craft or do ...

Hi PhoenixHays, Rule #6, sentence 4 states: Entries submitted electronically must be double-spaced and must include the title and page number on each page, but not the author’s name. So, I have a different opinion on your entry's chances. On the bright side (if indeed it is rejected in the first pas...

Re: Middle of the Night Writing

I also have a laugh box. Some nights I'm wrapped so tight that I feel my head might twist off and fly away. To prevent this, I write down jokes, memes and gifs that have made me laugh like an idiot and put them in a shoe box for future reference. Humorous stuff, whether mine or someone else's, helps...

I have notebooks full of brain poop! I figure it's in there weighing down the good ideas, so I shovel it out as fast as I can. Strange thing, though, some of the late night ideas have been judged good by trusted friends, so I keep them all. But I keep them in another room just in case there's a vibe...

Re: Conflict & Tension

Conflict derives from opposing forces, usually in the form of an obstacle to character goals. Communication is about shared meaning, which, for the purpose of fictional conflict, means that a reader will feel greater dramatic tension when they feel an emotional connection to the struggle. So in a se...

Addressed crit concerns. Rewrote the beginning for better engagement. Removed a couple of asides. Thought of a better ending and then thought better of thinking it was better. Stopped thinking and did a final read-through. Submitted. Fully plotted and half done with Q2 submission. Good luck, everyone!

You can do it Morgan. Sixty words per minute. Got a spare hour in the next month and a half?

OR

Fold space, tear along the crease. Then you'll have twice the time. Just remember which universe contains the paymaster.
