Re: History of LGBTQ+ Characters in the Contest

I believe you can take Dave at his word that LGBTQ+ characters and issues in contest stories play no part in his editorial decisions. I would personally be concerned as to whether non-cisgender language is prevalent enough in genre literature to pass the test of readability. If you believe that it i...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Welcome to the Forum, Shannon, Best of luck with your first entry, that's the biggest hurdle many writers have to get over. Many of us could sit for hours painstakingly editing every word in our stories until everything feels perfect. And in that way, I've edited the life right out of two stories. D...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

I kept a notebook handy when I had children to watch. Those world-shaking ideas would occur to me at the most inopportune times: changing diapers, cooking dinner, cleaning up...let's not go there. I could jot a quick note or two that would jog my memory for later. Good ideas evaporate fast if they a...

I get that this contest is SciFi & Fantasy, but does that mean it has to be scifi, or can it just be fantasy? Hi amalhaseeb, The contest rules ( https://www.writersofthefuture.com/contest-rules-writers/ ) mention nothing about Science Fiction or Fantasy. Works must be prose no longer than 17,00...

Last year my Q-2 first pass result arrived on July 8, pleasingly fast. In 2016, my Q-2 first pass result arrived a bit late on July 25th. The first pass, Q-2 result was the slowest ever in 2015 when the email arrived on August 18. There's more than enough time for a bouncing mid-July first pass this...

Hi Becky, You can find the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) manuscript preparation guidelines here: http://www.sfwa.org/2008/11/manuscript-preparation/ . These are the standard guidelines that nearly every market follows when their fiction guidelines instruct the author to &qu...

Tiered Rejections

Didn't realize that my Five Minute Rant would have quite so much interest. I wrote that after receiving a number of meaningless rejections. The old Hot and Cold game occurred to me as a - tongue in cheek - option for rejection standardization. YM Pang brought up its resemblance to the currently offe...

Do you wish to support yourself completely with your craft or do ...

I also have a laugh box. Some nights I'm wrapped so tight that I feel my head might twist off and fly away. To prevent this, I write down jokes, memes and gifs that have made me laugh like an idiot and put them in a shoe box for future reference. Humorous stuff, whether mine or someone else's, helps...

I have notebooks full of brain poop! I figure it's in there weighing down the good ideas, so I shovel it out as fast as I can. Strange thing, though, some of the late night ideas have been judged good by trusted friends, so I keep them all. But I keep them in another room just in case there's a vibe...
