Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Got an idea last night. Wrote a 1100w first draft this morning. Needs editing down. A flash is not a strong contender for winning WotF, but it is a fresh story and better than no substitution.

Thanks for the encouragement guys...and of course, Trevor.

They had invented a new game. That right there is where you put in the bad thing the children are doing, the thing that might keep some people up night. That sentence sent a chill up my spine, and had it been followed by something homicidal, I would've been thinking about it for a long time. They h...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Sometimes when you're feeling like seven different kinds of shit and don't feel like writing but know some writing has to get done, just tell yourself to sit down and write at least one good paragraph. Usually by the time you write that one paragraph you're feeling a little better and might get out...

*big, BIG hugs* Surgery is really rough. What you need right now is rest and recovery. If writing helps with that, great. If not, take a breather. Getting better should be your too priority right now. *nodnod* Hope your recovery pace picks up and you get back to full health quickly. 17 days to go, ...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

I'm feeling a little pitiful at the moment. I've plotted the story and started writing it weeks ago. I could get the first draft out in a day, maybe two, if I felt human-ish again. Surgery took more out of me than I expected. I am not throwing in the towel, but as the days drag on, I wonder if that ...

If you're worried about grammar, I would personally recommend checking out Dreyer's English. It's written by the chief copy editor of Random House, and it's both educational and entertaining (at least, it was to me personally). If you don't want to buy it, you can probably find it at your local lib...

I have read several stories that used this technique. It is common enough and useful enough that I consider it a tool, not a lazy gimmick. But I do not know if WotF judges have different views.

That's just it. Good luck on fleshing it out. You've still got a little more than a month. I'm trying to tighten the beginning of mine. Like orbivillein said, my stories often wonder when I do not have the core or essential idea nailed down. If I have that (I usually have to meander a lot before I find it) But once I have it, I can measure all deviations against it to see if they hold up to the original idea or change it.

Re: Over-thinkers Anonymous

This is a relentless issue for me. I asked Dave F. about it, and he said (I am paraphrasing) that I needed ask myself if making the change just to changed the story or if it made the story better. Otherwise, I was caught in a continuous loop.

Good Luck, I am still fighting this battle.

The personal reasons we each write is an interesting topic. Just not this topic.
I respectfully ask that we each break out new threads for additional topics.
