Re: First Four-Fifty Critique Exchanges

My Q4 story is nowhere near started yet, but I'll be happy to exchange 450 critiques with anyone this quarter. So PM/email me if you have one ready, and I will send mine as soon as I have something written!

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

RaeSnow - I'm in the same boat (emailed entry, no results yet), so I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one who hasn't heard back at this point. My guess is that Joni hasn't had time to relay results to all of us who submitted via email, so I'm planning to wait a bit longer before I query. I assume...

Re: Success!

I signed the contract and the editor said it was safe to share, so here we go: Mad Scientist Journal put out a call for classified ads and are planning to publish my submission in March 2018. It's a 180ish word fictional classified ad, so I'm not sure if that falls into flash or an even smaller cat...

First draft finished. Could use a first-450 exchange if there are any takers.

And hello again, everyone. It's been a while.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 32

Rumour hath it that Q1 is the lightest entry and Q4 the heaviest. Logic suggests that since you need to be in for the year if you're to have a chance of the grand prize, if you've missed every quarter so far you have to go for Q4. Thy logic is sound, Ishmael. Ellie, The data has been pooled from va...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 32

I'm in, with two days to spare! September 28th.

So, veteran forumites, there's this rumor floating around the forums that Q4 is tougher than the other quarters. Does anyone have data to substantiate? Or is it all hearsay?

Re: Limitation of nonexclusive electronic rights

Hi orbivillein, I agree with you on the importance of marketing and the benefit to having work available for free online. I'm curious what you think of a writer self-publishing a work after terminating the grant of non-exclusive electronic rights for the work. The way I see it, the writer then has t...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 32

Aww, thanks, Dustin! I can't wait to read it. JenD-F, there's about a month between finalists and winner announcements. The first 450 exchange is a critique exchange of the first 450 words of your story. There's an entire thread devoted to the concept here: http://forum.writersofthefuture.com/viewto...

Re: Limitation of nonexclusive electronic rights

I agree with your sound advice. And I wasn't intending to rule out the top tier magazines. =) Tor.com pays well enough that it's probably worth giving up a lifetime of reprints. Assuming the reprint rate is 1 cent/word, I'd have to reprint a story 19 times after an initial pub with BCS to match the ...

Re: Limitation of nonexclusive electronic rights

Thanks, Stewart! Good to know that BCS is amenable to a 180-day limit. Reprints are exactly the reason I asked about the clause. I've been fascinated with the idea of them ever since I heard of Mike Resnick's "No Heavy Lifting Sales," so I'm trying to keep an eye out for magazines that won...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 32

So, I just submitted my Silver HM story to Azimov's Science Fiction. Does anyone know how long after a story prints in a magazine I would be able to re-print it as a possible self-published novella? What's the typical time frame on a contract like? Tielore, you might want to look at the SFWA model ...

Limitation of nonexclusive electronic rights

Hi all, On Sept 1st, the SFWA released a new model magazine contract (https://www.sfwa.org/2015/09/sfwa-releases-a-new-model-magazine-contract/), and I've been trying to wrap my mind around the rights they advocate for short story authors. There's a clause in the contract on the limitation on nonexc...

Hi Strycher,

I won't be doing the Story in a Day challenge, but I should be done with my Q4 first draft next week and would love to do a critique exchange.
