Mine was a dinosaur western! I wonder if any westerns made it to finalist. We shall see when the antholo...

Well, I finally get to post a success! I made my very first sale! Joni called me November 15 to let me know that my Q1 Finalist story was selected as one of the published finalists for V33. The other PF and I got word today that we can finally talk about it publicly today, so since I've been burstin...

I can't remember if I've asked this or only thought about asking. I know folks have submitted rewrites, and some have had pretty good success with that. Just how rewritten are the stories you submit?

Re: Idioms and Tone

Good advice, Matt. I've limited most of it to dialogue, but there are a few that are a little more questionable. It's that tight 3rd person POV, though, that's got me scratching my head. Where do I draw the line between what I, the writer, am saying and what the character is observing and thinking. ...

Re: Idioms and Tone

Thanks. This is what my gut is telling me, too. The idioms I'm using either help add a certain time-period flavor to the piece or they add to the world building because they turn familiar phrases on their head in a way that only this particular world can. I will approach with caution, though, and ma...

Idioms and Tone

In a rough draft, I often find a lot of idioms and cliches slipping into my writing. That's fine. It's a rough draft. It's easy to eliminate them in the revisions process. However, in the submission I'm currently working on, I find myself wanting to cling to a few of the idioms. My story is set in a...

Wasn't that from the opening scene or something? It's been so many years since I've seen this movie.

PM Stuck in Outbox?

I've got a PM here on the forums that I tried to send, but it's in my outbox. I assume this means it has not sent to the individual I was attempting to contact. However, it shows as "Sent Oct 31." The weird thing is, when I click into my sent items folder, it does not appear there. So did ...

They claimed--in Twitter conversation with a few of us--that they weren't related to specific manuscripts but were meant to be a light-hearted list along the lines of Strange Horizons' .
