Re: Retellings

Similar to the other recent thread on magical realism, I have a question about retellings. I have an idea of a modern retelling of a lesser known work of a very famous author, but that material is all now public domain. As of now, I'm unsure if the story will end up at short story length or longer-...

Re: Why Do You Write?

Five years ago, 3,000 words per day felt impossible to me. Now it feels like slacking. I've had 15,000-word days, because I'm comfortable in the habit. I can do 3,000 words on a good day, but I haven't had a good day in awhile. I've been stressed all the time lately, and trying to shake that stress...

Re: The editorial process for short fiction

So sorry, Ishmael. I've heard horror stories like that. In one (much discussed here, I think), the editor practically wrote his own story -- adding in major elements of sadism and sexual brutality -- and then mocked the author for objecting. A little research showed he was famous for that. And for ...

Wet blanket note... Mike Resnick likes to point out, "The operative word in 'personal rejection' is 'rejection'." Oh, absolutely. On the one hand, personal rejections can give an author hope because it means they're closer to an acceptance than they might have gotten with a basic rejectio...

Started my first draft of a story, yesterday. Got 500 words in, got stuck, went to work, and realized I was beginning the story too early while I was halfway through my shift.
