Anyone up for a Q1 exchange?

Well, there's about three weeks left until the end of the quarter, and I've finally got my story in a place where I'm willing to swap for crits. It's currently sitting at 5700 words. If you're interested in a trade, feel free to PM me.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I just looked over my draft, and realised that I have some major conceptual issues that are going to mean I'm about to do some massive rewrites of this story. I'll not get to keep a significant chunk of what I've done, but hey ho -- better than sticking with something that doesn't feel like it's na...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

There's no way I can nail a first draft yet, tried that twice this year and ended up R. Maybe in a few years. I need to get better at subtext. These are fun to read keep em coming Moon. Honestly, I think some of that just comes down to what works for each individual writer. I don't think I'll ever ...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I have a rough idea of what I want and I am going to write every sentence with the question "how does this grip the reader?" I won't get tied down to my outlines or all the boring stuff I will try to insert. I will tackle each moment as it comes and try to keep the pace breakneck from sta...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I originally gravitated here from the Hatrack forums, so my personal strategy tends to be making sure those first 13 lines of prose are as awesome as possible. It doesn't always work, but it often does, although it tends to take a few drafts to really get it right. (I've also found that what I think...

Re: Contest Questions

I have a question about pro markets and the contest - I understand that a market is considered pro if it pays 6 cents a word or more, correct? But what if it only pays 6 cents up to a certain word count, and your story is longer than that? I'm guessing that still counts, but thought I'd ask :) In m...

Thank you both for the answers. No, i haven't included chapters. I was just looking to make sure i formatted the layout properly before i really did anything. If it's formatting you're looking for help with, the Shunn Manuscript Format is an excellent example to follow. The only difference you'll w...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Plugging away at my Q1 entry, slowly but surely. The bones are all in place; now it's just a matter of making sure the pacing is right and getting the prose where I'm happy with it. I might actually be done a couple of weeks before the deadline (but don't hold me to that, I'm just guessing). Nice w...

The maximum word count for the contest is 17000 words; chapters are not required. Scene breaks can be indicated with a pound sign, like so:

Some of my personal favorite mythos are from Native American tribes. I'm especially fond of pretty much any story that has to do with Coyote, in all of his various interpretations.

If you were to submit them anywhere, you'd unfortunately have to do it as reprints. Publishing online, even to a tiny audience, counts as publishing.

Re: Critique exchange for a 3600 word half completed story

My personal recommendation would be to finish the first draft before getting a full-fledged critique. I'm suggesting this for a couple of reasons: Firstly, it will mean that the critiquer has a better idea of what direction you want to take the story in rather than potentially leaving them to guess ...
