Re: Over-thinkers Anonymous

So, lately my problem is keeping ONE story idea. I start a story. It's a cool story, I like it. Then I get an idea that changes the idea slightly, and I think 'Ok, that's cool. That works'. I re-start the story. But it doesn't stay there. It keeps morphing and mutating and then before I know it, I ...

I'll admit to glancing at the Quarterly results thread - if you're going to twitch that long, you're at risk of being put away!

I've been mentally working on a fresh idea for Q3. Early this morning it began to gel. Time to let it flow. wotf042 Go go go go go! Re: Contest Questions

I thought it was interesting, because I was thinking about pro rates and looking at the prize payout for WOTF. Third place pays $500. Depending on how long your story is, that could either be a pro rate, or not. If your story is 10,000 words, that's only $0.05 per word, which isn't a pro rate payou...

Re: Contest Questions

This is certainly putting the cart before the horse but I have a question about the prizes. It looked to me (after doing a little searching) - that there is a workshop for 12 writers and 12 illustrators - I assume that is the top 3 each quarter. But despite assuming I have the following questions i...

Have you tried the 'Clear Formatting' option? There's usually one of those. Starts you over from scratch, but that might be preferable? (I'm not super good at figuring out this kind of thing without a visual reference.)

Something I'm confused on: If we're supposed to be keeping these confidential - no names, no titles, whatever - how does swapping my story bit with Writer X's story bit, and critiquing on each other's work remain confidential? I know that I got Writer X's work, and Writer X knows they got my work.....

It wasn't my intention to derail anything or undermine anyone else's spirits. I certainly wasn't trying to undermine the challenge. I made the mistake of voicing some private thoughts and concerns in a public space, and it turned out to be a bad call. My apologies to everyone.

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

A trick I've found to work for me, and maybe would for others as well, is the reminder to self that there are no crappy ideas. Have an idea for a story? Write it. Bugger whether people would like it or not, just write it. Write them all. Even if the drafts aren't complete. Then, when you want to si...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

On a recent podcast Anderson talks of not winning WotF (after 23 submissions) before getting a novel published, and mentions Sawyer having done similar. So - do you NEED to win? Winning is great. It's not the only way to get into writing, but it's a great foot in the door. Some people genuinely mig...

I'm trying to do both at the moment, and it is difficult to retain momentum. I'm trying to restrict Q3 s/s to bubbling ideas at the moment, but even that's interfering with my novel. Yeah, see, I'm no good at working on multiple projects at once. I do hope you continue entering WotF - and win soon....

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I'm starting to wonder if I'd do better to simply aim at novels instead of short fiction. They're what I really want to write anyway. They're just... really hard for me to retain my momentum on. If you treat every chapter like a short story, it's easier to keep the momentum. That's one of the thing...

If it were me, I'd shelve the story for a bit, just to give Dave some time to forget about it so it will reappear fresh with the revisions.
