Re: Writing Room/Office/Space

We've essentially only got two small rooms (bedroom and living room), and while I do have a desk of my own in the bedroom, I end up not using it much. I've been too traumatized by years of having to write and study in my bedroom as a student to feel comfortable going back to that. Instead, I usually...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

That, and I'm not even sure my story made it into Q2. I submitted June 14th, and didn't receive the usual confirmation from Joni. Fortunately, I emailed her about it on the 25th, and being the amazing person that she is, she replied same day, confirming that my story was received. Does that mean my...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

I've got a great story idea for this quarter. A mix of two eclectic interests, that may well be nobody's cup of tea. Dave might not like it. But I hope I will like it. After struggling to maintain momentum in the last two quarters, I think it's time I started writing for myself again. I figure there...

Just keeps getting bigger and bigger: David Farland said Ugh. So I'm wrapping up judging on the largest quarter of Writers of the Future ever, then go to check out quarter three, only to find that there are 15 percent more entries than ever! Stop entering, people. I don't need the extra competition...

I signed the contract and the editor said it was safe to share, so here we go: Mad Scientist Journal put out a call for classified ads and are planning to publish my submission in March 2018. It's a 180ish word fictional classified ad, so I'm not sure if that falls into flash or an even smaller cat...

So, being rather new to this (read: completely new to this), when is it appropriate to post about sales? When ink is dried on a contract? When a publication date is set? Something else entirely? I have another story in the queue this week - "After the Escape." It is unchanged from when it won Silver Honorable Mention in Q1 (So, amy has already given me a critique. I just wanted some more opinions before I dive into story surgery.) Cool. I'll take a look after I finish my Q3 submi...

While scouring The Story Doctor website, which features many of Dave's writing tips, I came across an interesting checklist Dave composed that he used to use. Re: Wanting to Do Well But Not Win...?

I feel a little like this. I'd prefer to win (and be associated) with SF rather than fantasy, yet my last entry was fantasy and (in my opinion) not written in my 'ideal style' (whatever that is). But I think the plot was a lot smoother, and the piece might have a better chance than some of my recent...

I particularly liked this part: No one wants to spend their own skills to writing their informative thesis writing paper and they will probably have no time for editing and proofreading. It totally undercuts my years of academic research. Whoops. Guess I should have known better--no sensible person ...

Well, the first draft of my Q3 story's done (at just over 7,000 words) and while I'm not in any way satisfied with it, I'm pleased. Now the real work can begin. This is now the third new version of an older story I've been playing around with, and I hope at least I've got the right viewpoint charact...
