Yaay big response from Wulf Moon, that made my day wotf010 Yes I didn't mentioned it was a mysteryş Thanks to you İ found out it's called cozy. I'm also conspiring its about the ethnicity of antihero that editors fear to get sued. I'll change his ethnicity and shop it around to cozy mystery market....

Re: Contest Questions

I did not receive a 1099 for my prize money or per-word-rate, but I reported them on my taxes as I would any business income.

IIRC Tim Powers, Kevin Anderson, Rebecca Moesta, and Mike Resnick went into some depth on the subject of taxes as it affects writers.

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

On a recent podcast Anderson talks of not winning WotF (after 23 submissions) before getting a novel published, and mentions Sawyer having done similar. So - do you NEED to win? Nope. Many many many more authors break in having not won WotF than break in having won WotF. It’s a path, but not the on...

Chuck - Thanks for the kind words! I'm terrible at keeping up with facebook these days. Sorry

The continuing adventures of Nya and his terribly unfortunate mortal roommate are currently in a holdpile, so with luck there will be more of everyone's favorite eldritch horror to share.

I'll be watching too. Wulf-Do you get a preview of the other winning stories? Would be cool if they let you do that so you can talk about the stories with the other winners. They issued eARCs (with blank pages where the art belong) via .pdf to the winners in Vol. 34. Each winner got their quarter's...

While I do know of at least one winner who had their curse words... erm... sanitized during the editing phase, for this market you may want to consider whether it's worth submitting on hard mode by toeing close to a line that a judge has explicitly explained is a potential deal breaker for him.

Howler was about 2,250. And I probably added about 250 words after the acceptance during edits. I don't know that I'd be concerned overly concerned with story length for this market. There are plenty of examples of shorts that verge on flash and novelettes that butt up against the wordcap. Think mor...

When you find yourself in that position of wondering whether you're still eligible to enter the contest, you can always send a note to Joni and ask. Include the word count of the stories you've sold, who bought the stories, and how much they paid you. She'll let you know. The, erm, perception is th...

If you take 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in any given quarter, you're ineligible in the future. Anything else, and you're still eligible.

(Except possibly, if you are a Published Finalist and being published in WotF constitutes your fourth pro publication, then you would end up pro-ing out with the sale)

You definitely should include HMs to your author's bio and market your work. I'm sure it will land you some publications. Don't you think so? The standing advice around these parts is that an Honorable Mention is essentially still a rejection. It's a good rejection, and shows ability and progress, ...

There have been pretty short stories that have won. Mine was about 2k words. Janey Bell's "Face in the Box" was pretty short in Vol. 34 as well. I recall "The God Whisperer" being very short too. I don't know that there's a floor on word count, so if your story is good, it will s...

I have a couple responses, 1. It certainly doesn't help your submission chances. Them being at the beginning isn't great as you absolutely must grab the editor and keep their attention while the pages turn. DF has made mention that one typo-style error isn't likely to make him reject a story, but mo...
