Re: Success!

Yeah the fact that they were my first sale a year ago has earned them a special place in my heart. I'm happy to have been able to submit to their open call (happier still to be accepted).

Re: Success!

Mad Scientist Journal accepted two fictional advertisements from me. Normally I'd wait to circulate contracts to post about it, but I wanted to tell everyone here because their submission window is still open. http://madscientistjournal.org/submissions/ and this maybe gives you more time to get some...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Thank you all! I am still new to all of this. I have a few children's books that are available but they aren't actually published yet. I really want to branch out and discover the best way to publish my other genre's. Does anyone have advice on the best way to get your work out there to readers? Ar...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

The facebook group Matt mentioned had a post about how "Fists of Fusion Island Grill" was the best restaurant they had went to during the week. Past winners kind of all posted about how great it was and so on. The hotel is connected to what felt like a big open-air shopping mall (LA people...

Re: Vol. 34 (2018) -- Anthology, Workshop, & Gala

The Workshop in a Nutshell [...] we argued over whether quotations are necessary for good writing [...] What I said was just use them! They make prose more intelligible! That being said, Jeremy schooled me badly on this, and I obviously missed the entire point of the book I was trying to read (The ...

Re: Vol. 34 (2018) -- Anthology, Workshop, & Gala

S[...] "The Howler on the Sales Floor," by Jonathan Ficke is wickedly funny, interweaving ancient and modern elements into an urban fantasy piece that really made me wonder about some of my co-workers in the office! It is less than 7 pages long. It won 3rd place. " [...] Thanks man! ...

Sidenote: Take past winners restaurant suggestions with a grain of salt. I'm pretty sure they sent us to one as a joke ;)

Re: Acceptable level of violence for contest entry?

I think violence should be fine, so long as you're not going into paragraphs and paragraphs of gory detail. What always worried me were the requirements around profanity. I actually stripped all the profanity out of my Q2 (and thought it weakened the story) but what I read later suggested that I mi...

Re: Reject Rejectomancy!

There are people I've observed say something along the lines of "I could make a great anthology out of my non-winning stories from WotF that went on to sell at [various big, pro, markets]." Then they list of MANY stories that found homes in Apex, F&SF, Lightspeed, Asimov's, etc. I thin...

Okay, since today was Thursday, these are two relevant pieces of judge wisdom (Abbreviated for the moment): 1. Rob Sawyer said: Write ambitious fiction. Don't try something ambitious, get rejected, then see [thing you don't hold in high esteem] being successful and think to yourself "I'll bring...

There are loads of free resources that might be worth checking out too. At least two semesters of Brandon Sanderson's BYU lectures are available on Youtube, which are pretty great.

Here's a downside to the workshop: Eventually it ends and you have to fly home. Grrr. I'm going to go through my notes once I settle back into real life and hopefully will be able to parrot some of the wisdom we heard along. If you ever get a chance to talk to Tim Powers seize it with both hands. Th...

The 24 hour story... man it’s a weird experience but mainly because of the stranger interview and the cameras (so... many... cameras). I finished at about 3000 words and thought it was a decent draft, but one I really needed more time to address the magic system I developed with more bounce and comp...

My story is has 10 chapters is that too long? If you're under the word count you're good. People have won with short short stories ("The God Whisperer" from few years ago was short, mine is about 2,000 words), people have won with submissions that are right up on the upper limit. So beyon...

Someone here said something about how SHMs were in the best possible position to take the leap to the F/Winner category. The reasoning was something along the lines of: A SHM was one of the last few that didn't make the cut to SF, so you know it was a really good story, but it was missing... somethi...
