Re: Go for the novel? Or stick with the short story?

Writing short stories is nice because you can exercise the "finishing stuff" muscle. Learning to finish pieces is a valuable skill all of its own (moving from idea, to outline (or not), to draft, to finished draft, to polished draft, to submittable piece). If you want to write novels thoug...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Ishmael, your determination is certainly an inspiration! A friend asked me the other day when I would stop trying to “make it” if it didn’t work out. My response was to channel Galaxy Quest. Never Give Up, Never Surrender! That being said, I have a question in the vein of submitting four stories in...

Yeah this williamhawk dude is getting pretty annoying. And setting him to "foe" doesn't seem to do anything.

Yeah I would definitely classify having a subsequent quarter's submission DQd because an earlier quarter placed as a "high quality problem."

Nothing says you can't find the DQd story a home in a different publication, right?

Re: Angry Robot Open Sub Period Nov 1st - Dec 31st

I have a novel outlined that I've been poking at listlessly. I think it's time to kick myself in the pants, get this thing out of my head, and send it in before the deadline. And I have a (very) rough first draft that needed a kick in the pants to edit. Is it weird that due dates and deadlines are ...

IIRC Brandon Sanderson sold Elantris (or at least had an offer for Elantris) and then hired his agent. So it goes definitely goes Offer -> Agent on occassion.

Good going! If we're writing, we've got trunk stories. Let Dave be the judge. If you don't have a story in, there's no way you can win. Yeah, so, that Q3 finalist I just had? Trunk story. Well, not quite, but "story I haven't touched in a year, pulled out and polished up" counts, right? W...

I'm embarrassed that my first post is such a stupid question, but here we are: I got the email saying I got an Honorable Mention, but my name doesn't show up on the list of HMs on the blog post. Is that because I didn't request a certificate or was I overlooked? I think you need to reply to the not...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 34

Of the finalists, three winners are chosen (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place). They go to LA. Sometimes Finalists are asked to hold their piece from submitting it to other markets because, depending on how the anthology shapes up, one or two might be "published finalists." Published finalists are i...

How many waves of Rejections usually hit per quarter?

Seems like 2-3. Paper submissions seem to get reviewed last and any Rs in that batch appear to go out with the final set of results. Beyond that... {shrugs}?

Re: Hero's Journey / Tests allies and enemies

It sounds like you're committing to the Hero's Journey as a checklist, rather than a pattern/contour for the story. I don't think that the best way to plot a story is to take a structure like the Hero's Journey and make a 1:1 transference from structure to your story (though if it works for you, I g...

I think a good question to ask is: "What does {element} do?" If the answer is "check a box" I'd suggest that's not sufficient. If the answer is "advance the timbre of 'speculative fiction' while allowing me to delve into [concept A and B that further my theme]" then hec...
