Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Congrats to everyone who heard back already. I was really hoping to hear something by now, because the anticipation of not knowing is killing me, whatever the response is. But I was also one of those who got locked out on December 31st and had to email my sub to Joni because I waited too long. I ho...

Re: Vol. 34 (2018) -- Anthology, Workshop, & Gala

Okay, since today was Thursday, these are two relevant pieces of judge wisdom (Abbreviated for the moment): 1. Rob Sawyer said: Write ambitious fiction. Don't try something ambitious, get rejected, then see [thing you don't hold in high esteem] being successful and think to yourself "I'll bring...

Hey all, over the next week or so I'm going to be posting about each of the individual stories. So if you haven't gotten a copy of the book yet, you can get a glimpse of the art and a bit about each story. I won't post every link here, but they'll all be at jonficke.com

Re: Vol. 34 (2018) -- Anthology, Workshop, & Gala

Good morning all, I'm still kinda getting my feet under me in the real world, and have only just begun trying to record thoughts/impressions/experiences from the conference. I'm going to put some stuff up at my site rather than drop huge walls of text over here, because I think the reading experienc...

There are loads of free resources that might be worth checking out too. At least two semesters of Brandon Sanderson's BYU lectures are available on Youtube, which are pretty great.

Here's a downside to the workshop: Eventually it ends and you have to fly home. Grrr. I'm going to go through my notes once I settle back into real life and hopefully will be able to parrot some of the wisdom we heard along. If you ever get a chance to talk to Tim Powers seize it with both hands. Th...

I think the timeline might move up. We’re hanging out in the lobby before going to the airport and “the 1st and 2nd passes are done.”

So... uh... not sure if this is good or bad for you all?

The 24 hour story... man it’s a weird experience but mainly because of the stranger interview and the cameras (so... many... cameras). I finished at about 3000 words and thought it was a decent draft, but one I really needed more time to address the magic system I developed with more bounce and comp...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Apparently there was a glitch with the submission software that made him unable to read for a bit so Dave got a little behind. He said he hopes to be through reading the whole pile next week, but he isn’t sure that he will. So, into the bunker friends, should be a week or two more for pass #1* * ass...

My story is has 10 chapters is that too long? If you're under the word count you're good. People have won with short short stories ("The God Whisperer" from few years ago was short, mine is about 2,000 words), people have won with submissions that are right up on the upper limit. So beyon...

So I was racing against the clock last night to upload my entry to the contest... 1. How do I know that the submission went in for the quarter ending March 31? I couldn't find submission cutoff times (eastern v pacific). 2. I woke up in the middle of the night realizing that I didn't double space t...

Re: What's a Silver Honorable Mention as opposed to a regular HM?

Someone here said something about how SHMs were in the best possible position to take the leap to the F/Winner category. The reasoning was something along the lines of: A SHM was one of the last few that didn't make the cut to SF, so you know it was a really good story, but it was missing... somethi...

Re: What's a Silver Honorable Mention as opposed to a regular HM?

Other people have noted that anything short of winning or a published finalist is a rejection. If you think of WotF less of a contest with contest results, and more of an annual anthology that you are hoping to be included in, then anything but the stories that end up in the anthology are "reje...

This is off-topic I realize, but I got my copy of WotF Volume 34 from Amazon today. I also checked Galaxy Press's website and it also says the book will be released...

Dang, I have three stories to pick between before march ends. Then two more in my head I want to get out asap. Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Just got an interesting personal from Podcastle: For the most part I like this story. My main problem is its slight tendency to over-explain things, which spoils the pacing for me. In particular, I think you could stand to trust the reader to infer a little more of Cers internal state, rather than ...

Vol. 34 (2018) -- Anthology, Workshop, & Gala

Hey all, thought I'd kick off a thread here with the cover of the anthology, which is predictably awesome, no? Also, they forwarded me a .pdf eARC of the Q4 winners' stories. If anyone wants to read them, all they have to do is agree to post a review on Amazon/goodreads/bookseller-of-choice. Send me...
