Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

I also have a previously written story in reserve as a backup, although that a) probably won't go anywhere and b) seems like cheating. To me, this sounds less like cheating and more like insurance! It feels like cheating because a) my writer's brain claims I should have it out somewhere else and b)...

Re: Websites (This one's not spam, I swear)

Wordpress seems the consensus recommendation. So... here we go: www.jonficke.wordpress.com it is.

I will say that so far it's both super intuitive, and super... um... not. I had to google how to edit links away from defaults, create tags. I'm sure I just need to get used to it.

Fantasy, or at least some flavor of historical setting, seems to come easier to me than sci-fi/futuristic settings.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Just finished another round of rewrites. Looks like I'm going to make it for Q1 after all, although this isn't the story I had originally intended to submit. This one is coming in just shy of 2300 words though and that concerns me. Is that too short for the contest? Should I add some more depth and...

Re: Questions: Scene breaks

Thank you! I saw your post, and the FB thread, and read them both with great interest. I'm with you that I think I'm a novelist at heart, but after reading your post, I realize I need to focus on writing stories in the 5-7K word range (at least for this contest). Don't be afraid of short. My 3rd wa...

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Here's to hoping all of you have an awesome day with plenty of bounty. Seconded! (I have to work today. My Dollar General stays open all day, for some stupid reason. wotf002 ) Grrr... Hopefully it's a quiet day and you can spend a lot of it mentally planning out writing.

I heard Mary Robinette Kowal recommend it on Writing Excuses but balked at cost when I wasn't sure if I'd like it. I should do a trial though.

That's me. I'm Topanga Canyon. When I found this out, it was one of the biggest shocks of my life. It was like I had a secret identity I didn't even know about. The stories I could tell you! And I fully intend to tell them all. The good news is: I didn't give up forever. I came back, and my stories...

One cool thing about the contest is you have room to experiment because it runs every quarter. If it doesn't win you don't necessarily have a broken story. You can find it a home elsewhere, and in the meantime you learn something about your own writing and something about the contest. [...]What may...

Re: Retellings

I think it's a question of degree. To some extent a lot of stories share an archetype and are "retellings" of the core hero's journey for example. But when the details and voice and execution are unique, it totally works. It's when the retellings lacks the unique element to set it apart th...

Re: Questions: Scene breaks

My stories tend to go long and so I made sure that the one I submitted for Q4 was under the standard manuscript format based word count just to be on the safe side. If my story gets rejected, I want to at least make sure its not rejected for a technical foul. You might want to read Martin Shoemaker...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

It’s been a week, JF, have you heard? Did Joni tell you how long they’d take to judge? When you do hear, don’t forget to ask her which judges judged your quarter. I did hear! I got 3rd (so surreal). I totally did not ask which judges were on Q4, but she said that Kevin J. Anderson laughed out loud ...

My story "The Final Sundering of Hellas" will be in the forthcoming anthology "Tales of Ruma" (early 2018). The anthology is the tie-in fiction associated with a tabletop RPG, Ruma: Dawn of Empire, which was funded on Kickstarter. The premise of the game world is that in the post...

Websites (This one's not spam, I swear)

I see some people have websites in their signatures. Does anyone have advice about starting one? Hosting or other companies you recommend (or recommend we avoid)? I'll confess to web design being a glaring hole in my tech-saviness.

Re: The editorial process for short fiction

So sorry, Ishmael. I've heard horror stories like that. In one (much discussed here, I think), the editor practically wrote his own story -- adding in major elements of sadism and sexual brutality -- and then mocked the author for objecting. A little research showed he was famous for that. And for ...

I can't even imagine what it must be like for Dave to get through THOUSANDS of stories every single quarter like that. Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Thank you all for the advice and encouragement. I’m about to sit down to turn out another tale. Do most of you who are submitting for the competition also simultaneously submit to publishers, magazines, anthologies, etc? I guess if you’re good (and lucky) you’ll either chalk up a win in the competi...
