Re: What does "win" mean?

Hi Chris, "Win" means getting first, second, or third place in any given quarter. Essentially, if you get any form of cash prize, you have "won" the contest, even if you did not get first place or the grand prize. You can absolutely enter multiple quarters in a row before result...

Not weird at all. They are for me as well. The tricky part comes when you're trying to write and you don't have a deadline to work for.

Re: Angry Robot Open Sub Period Nov 1st - Dec 31st

Normally, an agent is the person who gets your book in front of an editor. Angry Robot has these open door periods specifically to try and find authors who have good books, but who are having a hard time finding an agent, or simply haven't found one yet. Wesley Chu is probably the most notable succe...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

I'm going to disagree here, but with good reason. Editors will never, ever publish you out of pity: they will only publish you when the story is good enough and right for them. And the reason it's important I disagree is that one day soon the brain weasels will start to whisper "they only publ...

Re: Are aliens needed?

Depends on the kind of story. Is it going for a realistic, hypothetically plausible near-future vibe? Something like The Expanse? If so, I wouldn't use aliens unless the story was about them. Otherwise, I like me some creatures and aliens. Aliens do, however, force you to spend words describing them...

I've noticed a lot of people talking about numbered drafts, or saving each edit under a different file name. EDIT: I lied. I also need a view outside like most folks have mentioned. I live out on an old farm, so the vistas are quite stunning. Re: "We regret that we cannot accept children's stories." Define "children!"

My impression from reading the volumes aligns with what Matt and Amy are saying. Plenty of the stories that win Writers of the Future could be easily considered YA. Some of them are not, but some of them are. By "children's stories" I think they mean something that could appear in a Highli...

I have a desk by the door in the living room of the apartment my wife and I are living in while I finish my Masters.
