Re: Mixed Viewpoint Styles Across Characters

N.K. Jemisin did something similar in "The Fifth Season" and won a Hugo. If anything, what she did was more sneaky and disruptive of reader expectations. I say go for it, if you can make it work.

Re: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books You Enjoy?

I just finished "Senlin Ascends," by Josiah Bancroft. A really cool, very weird steam-punk story involving the Tower of Babel. Probably the best self-published book I've read. I definitely recommend it! I need to look for it, but I may have seen it someplace. It's quite good. It took me a...

Re: V34 Q1 Analysis and Discussion

Dave's Writing Tip today was on word count. He said that "word count" is actually not the number of words in a story. A word, by professional definition, is 6 character spaces. Therefore, most stories are actually 30% longer than the computer calculated word count. So sometimes novice wri...

Re: V34 Q1 Analysis and Discussion

While scouring The Story Doctor website, which features many of Dave's writing tips, I came across an interesting checklist Dave composed that he used to use. Here's a link: https://mystorydoctor.com/12588-2/ . Talk about extensive. I started reading not realizing how in-depth it was and finished w...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

Thank you. I really appreciate the advice. I had no idea how much the first page mattered until recently. To expand on this, is it imperative that the first sentence be the hook or might it be included within the first paragraph or somewhere in the first page. Imagine the reader to have the attenti...

I don't think it's possible. Best you can probably do is scrub all of your information from the site and create a new account.

Re: Question about rules - Publishing Story

Peony is spot on. Generally speaking, unless a magazine, contest, or anthology specifically allows for simultaneous submissions, it's not a good idea to send them a story that you've already sent somewhere else. Editors get grumpy when they fall in love with a story and want to buy it, only to find ...

Anthropomorphization is pretty common, actually. The already-mentioned Chanur, the Kzinti from the Known Space books, the Gorn from Star Trek, and so on. Here's an article to check out: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SlidingScaleOfAnthropomorphism WARNING: TvTropes is rightly known as th...

Re: If I get a fourth professional sale while I'm waiting for the results, do I get disqualified?

Thought I'd point this out. To quote the contest rules: 5. The Contest is open only to those who have not professionally published a novel or short novel, or more than one novelette, or more than three short stories, in any medium. Professional publication is deemed to be payment of at least six ce...

Re: If I get a fourth professional sale while I'm waiting for the results, do I get disqualified?

I can't tell you whether that idea is taboo or not because I don't know. HOWEVER, I recommend editing your post to remove the information about your story because contest entries are done anonymously and posting any identifying details about it on this forum could potentially disqualify it. This is...

Re: If I get a fourth professional sale while I'm waiting for the results, do I get disqualified?

Based on the rules as written, you are disqualified from entering after your fourth professional short story sale. If you make a fourth sale while waiting for results, your current entry still qualifies, but you will be disqualified from entering again.
