Re: Average WOTF story word count?
My last sub was 10k+, which made me dig into this question a bit more. I looked at V29, V33, V35, V36 (these were the ones I was able to get for $0.99...) and assumed 280 words per Kindle page (48 winners plus 3 pub'd finalists): < 3000: 3 stories (6%) 3000-5499: 22 stories (43%) 5500-7999: 20 stori...

Re: Goals four V.38!
My goals remain the same: submit every quarter, consistently improve my results, hopefully get closer to winning. Keep my stories on the market until they sell or have to be trunked, write more books and work toward getting an agent. Keep on keepin’ on! This is about where I'm at. I've submitted ev...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 37
I’m much less excited this time, as this is the first story I’ve submitted that I didn’t really think was any good. After 3 HMs out of 3 submissions so far, I’m expecting a straight rejection this time! That's how I'm feeling. Mine was a short kind of quirky one, but I've had some success with thos...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37
I just realised my Q2 HM was only a third draft. How many drafts do people do generally? I usually read through a story multiple times as I'm writing and a couple of times all the way through after, tinkering with minor things. The only different versions I save are my actual submissions to differe...

Long time lurker here. Been following the thread and enjoying it, while also trying to stay distracted with a new novel WIP. That said, I happened to be over on Submission Grinder and noticed a rejection report had been filed for Writers of the Future. A 132-day form rejection, posted today, 07/14....

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37
It's actually quite exciting isn't it, all this waiting around. Almost worth entering just to get that anticipatory thrill (oh so fleeting). Though the revelation that Joni calls the finalists before the rejection emails come out means that the whole 'dodged the first wave, maybe I'll go all the wa...

Re: How low should you shoot when submitting to venues?
I think you're right that it's all of the above. There are only so many markets that pay professional rates, and they each have their own preferences about what types of stories they'll publish, so I wouldn't limit yourself strictly to pro markets unless you're only interested in writing the types o...

Re: Why do you submit? (all markets)
The biggest one for me isn't really on your list: 6.) Self-assessment. How good/bad am I? Submitting just to help you finish a story might get you into the first market, but what then? And that first market will most likely be a rejection, so it couldn't be just to get your words read either, unless...

With the info Joni released I believe it's safe to assume the ones that received phone calls are reading the forum responses and chuckling. I for one haven't received any call so I don't have to worry about that. I do hope for something I can hang on the wall of the office. Good luck to all and to ...
