Re: Success!

I've been taking Dean Wesley Smith's free course on Fiction Kickstarters https://wmg-publishing-workshops-and-lectures.teachable.com/p/kickstarter and am giving an open submission anthology a go (it's live now!). If you're interested in which SFF authors your writing is most like (or in using comput...

Re: Why do you submit? (all markets)

The biggest one for me isn't really on your list: 6.) Self-assessment. How good/bad am I? Submitting just to help you finish a story might get you into the first market, but what then? And that first market will most likely be a rejection, so it couldn't be just to get your words read either, unless...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 37

With the info Joni released I believe it's safe to assume the ones that received phone calls are reading the forum responses and chuckling. I for one haven't received any call so I don't have to worry about that. I do hope for something I can hang on the wall of the office. Good luck to all and to ...

Got mine too. Revised my SHM into an R. This was my first (and likely last) revise and resubmit attempt for WotF - I was hoping it would break me out of my rut, but it must be deeper than I thought....

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

Thanks for this. You have given me some stuff to think about. I have often wondered about creating checklist stories in hopes of stringing together HMs. I suppose I am still new to this contest and after a few years I might have a better idea of my approach, what aspects to be consistent in and whe...

Re: Success!

I'm happy to announce I have a fun story in a fun anthology that just came out last week: The Church of Raw in Thuggish Itch: Scientific . The story was a quirky early WOTF rejection that I still really liked, but was a poor fit for most markets, so I've been shopping it around for a couple of years...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

I hope I can land an HM this quarter. My ratio is embarrassing, I was hoping to do better this year. I am still at the point where my absolute best effort barely makes an HM. I gotta improve that next year. I'm starting to think the place/rejection ratio is overrated (though this may be due to mine...

Re: 4 in 36

I know these challenges are meant to be fun and motivational, but just to spoil that a little, I have a rules question.... Do repeat submissions count? I personally would say yes, but I'm open to hearing thoughts otherwise. Is the challenge more about writing or submitting? This will be my first qua...

Re: Word Counts

I always go from the first word to the last word, without header or title, then work out how many # section breaks there are and subtract it, because I can't bring myself to be vague and approximate. But nearly every market just asks for "rounded to the nearest 100", so it doesn't really ...

Short Fast Q4 Exchange

I have a 1500 word story I'd like another set of eyes on, with say a one week turnaround so I can still get it submitted this quarter. If you've got a short piece and can get some general impressions back quick, I'd be happy to swap!

Joni Labaqui here from the Writers of the Future contest with some good news. You are still in the running for the 3rd Quarter. Your story made it through the "first pass", meaning you will be judged now by our coordinating judge, David Farland. But I also wanted let you know that you shou...

Re: Format of computer folders, files, and programs

Yeah, I wouldn't mess with the fonts in the manuscript, though you might include notes indicating which text needs which treatment. I don't think there's a standard notation in SMF for different fonts.
