Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

I put a lot of research into my character names and choose them carefully... Sometimes. Sometimes I pick the first thing that comes to mind, that rolls off the tongue - but Wulf is right, I've often changed them later to something more meaningful. I stick to two or three syllables (prefer two!) and ...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Swift knows, but just for public accountability, I wrote at least 2 short stories of 3000 words and submitted to WotF and elsewhere. I've written one already that might be my Q4, but I plan to write at least one more. I'm almost done with the first draft of my scifi novel, as well, and am still quer...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Thanks so much for the write-up. Great reminders I'll be adding to my folder for review. So jealous you got to take a class from Dan Wells. Isn't making Bella Swan the perfect choice for her books because that is the classic gothic heroine? I suppose if one were writing some version of gothic horro...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

I don’t really do “drafts” per se for short stories. I edit a story until it is done. I’ll often reread and make major and minor changes for a week or so until I consider it “finished” and might take a personal rejection as an opportunity to tweak. So I don’t really have drafts. I’m also rarely prec...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

Over the last week, I've said "Character is action" in multiple critiques. This is a quote from Dan Wells, and his seminar on Creating Character Arcs at SSWS, about the importance of having active characters. I asked Wulf for permission to post a write-up on the concept, so here I go. Char...

Re: HM and SHM Crit Exchange?

I've gotten busier and get more crit requests than I used to, so for longer stories (10k+) I'll give you my thoughts on the first 5k words. If the story compels me to read on, I'll do more, but I can only promise the first 5k. If that works for you, send me a PM.

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

When we had dinner with Kary at SSWS she was kind enough to read over openings for us, and tell us if she'd pass them up/keep reading and why. She was looking for a definite character in a clear setting with something of a problem (I think she said indication of plot) and a clear speculative element...

Re: Wulf Moon's SUPER SECRETS Workshop & Challenge!

I did a lot of experimenting in my first year writing. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. Rs are a hard medicine but if you learned something in writing the story, your craft grew and your next story will benefit. No word written in sincerity is wasted. I love Wulf’s quote. If we’re not faili...

Re: Cursing and Sexual Situations in WOTF Stories?

It also helps if you're Tarentino, frankly. I would be very cautious using any terms that are currently taboo, particularly racist or sexist terms, unless there is a very compelling story reason to do so.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

They're showing as a little behind on the Grinder, yeah. A lot of places take a break in July and August, I've noticed. Usually that is for peak conference season, but I'd guess this year people are just flat burnt out. A lot of markets have been slower than usual. Good luck!

Re: Horrid fiction?

While I’ve rarely read anything I’d qualify as horrid, I suspect the impetus for this question came from the desire to learn from poorly written fiction. I’d recommend critiquing as an approach. Much of what I’ve learned about writing has come from doing lots of critiques of other people’s stories. ...

Re: Discussion: Q2 Volume 37

Results range from 2-4 months. The average is 3, and that’s fairly consistent (although Q4 results tend to be faster because of their deadlines and Q1 tends to run longer because of the workshop and gala). I’d say we’re getting close to results time, but it could be a few weeks yet. Hopefully Joni w...
