Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

But this is a good time to ask a question. What things, if any, have you learned from this exercise? Why did I have you descend into this alleged madness? I had my reasons. What have you discovered personally? Well, I noticed in my editing passes of my Q3 entry how I was able to cut easily. It help...

Chuck - I think you took out some of your strongest lines in this last version. That's what was bothering me about my first try - it was skeletal. And Wulf said HEAD not SKULL. For instance, the line "He felt a guilty relief when she went silent" sent chills down my spine and is altered en...

Okay, completed most of my to do list earlier than anticipated. Some weirdo in a black mask messed up my plans, but what are you gonna do? I took another look at my 500 and literally cut it in half, cleaned up the beginning, and am much happier with it than the other monstrosity I posted. Google Doc...

I'm in for Q3, with a fresh story. I haven't missed a Quarter since my first time submitting the third quarter of 2017, so this marks two years of stories going into the contest.

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I just submitted my fresh Q3. I wrote two, picked the strongest, and polished it as long as I could. I'm heading to a conference at the end of June and want to focus on the novel and prep for querying (I HATE synopses), so it was time. Best of luck to all of you still working on your stories. I have...

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

I'm with Peony on this one. I worked hard for several hours this morning to cut the story down without losing its soul, and produced two different versions. I selected the best of those two and shared it here. As for rewriting, I have neither the time nor the mental energy to do so. I have a novel t...

Of course. My feeling was, though, that cutting to five hundred really focused the story and made it more powerful. This exercise didn’t feel, to me, like it made the story better in the same way.

Chuck, I like it! I like the determination and the dread, and the twist. Humans can be so myopic. I got "it" just before I read the reveal, which is perfect pacing. Surprising but inevitable. I still wonder if that block of exposition couldn't be smoothed out somehow. "When his people...

I'm reading 11.22.63 right now and am loving it. I love his characterizations and the way he grows setting without breaking the tension. He really is a master. The only other thing of his I've read is The Regulators and I did not like it. I think I'm learning almost as much from King's novel as I am...

Hey AjZach, nice editing. I really like the bit about the lightning pointing to the spot in her dreams. Your prose is solid, no issues there (except for "touch" should be "touched" I think). I wonder, if you could give Julia a stronger internal conflict and arc, if the story migh...

Mother of Dragons is Liz - Becky is me! Pretty much what Brittany said - yes, this contest is for unpublished authors but it’s not for beginning writers. You want the editor to read it without one complaint. Because he's got 1000 more to read, and his tired eyes are just waiting for a reason to pass and move on to an easier one. Also, Becky, you have one tiny error. In a 500, it stands out like the beacon on a lighthouse. Fix that. : ) I think I fix...

My word count says 498. Wulf, that was brutal and I only had to cut 100 words. But it was worthwhile. I first put it through the 10% solution, except for the last 3 steps. This got me from 600 to 540. Then I focused on my theme (dying of the light) and threw out everything that wasn't that. That got...

Before I get to Sutherland's Flash piece, I recently posted another SUPER SECRET. It was on word count. Why, when I said not too much not too little, am I having everyone work on Flash? Flash will likely be too small to win this contest (not always, but either fringe of the spectrum gets very hazy)...

It's from a very famous poem by Dylan Thomas. We're all riffing on the same theme, but the real genius wrote the poem in 1947.
