Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

"Orson Scott Card taught us you never want your protagonist to cry, because then your reader won't have to." That's an interesting point Wulf. I have noticed that while reading and writing but never thought of it in words that way. Thanks for the tip! I have nothing but the utmost respect...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

I tend to think that my most recent story is the best I've ever written, and they usually are, because I work so hard on each one to incorporate the lessons I've learned since writing the last. So I don't twitch as much as I used to, because I'm always placing my hopes on the NEXT story because it's...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

My story is mostly finished. I've gotten some excellent help and critiques from those wiser than I and it's ready to go. Going to let it sit a few days, give it a final polish about the 20th, and submit. Good luck everyone!

Re: The Writers of the Future Podcast at Dragon Con

Enjoyable. Very interesting discussion about the difference between short stories and novels related to another post the other day. I read short stories but not nearly as often as I do novels. I really enjoyed hearing them talk about what they’re looking for too - the biggest thing I heard is what M...

I don't think they're revealed until after the quarter is complete. At least, I've never seen an updated quarterly list.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

I think that qualifies as a peep. In past quarters, I'd have guessed that meant results within a week or two. Now I think it means within a month or so. But here's hoping for a quick quarter!

Re: SUPERSTARS Writing Seminar

It's funny, I lived in Colorado until I was 23 and I don't think I've ever been to Garden of the Gods. Given my split interest in short stories and my drive to become a published novelist, I know Superstars would be a great opportunity for me. Personally, there's little I've found as far as craft go...

I do what Wulf suggests. One sentence and a salutation. That’s it. When I have more to say, I’ll say it. I personally cringe when the ask for a bio - I’m just not good at those!

Re: Moon's SUPER SECRET Bonus Challenge! Vol. 36

His word-association writing prompt game is very similar to how I come up with stories, which I find striking. Letting the mind wander and make subconscious connections must connect to something innate in us. I struggle with the joyful first draft. My first novel was absolutely like that, until abou...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Given how long the last quarter took, I suspect we're looking at October for results. Q4 is the fastest, because they need to get things sorted for the awards ceremony and book printing, but given how fast the contest is growing, I think we need to adjust our twitch times back 4-6 weeks. Send your o...

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36

I started dreaming about a character (cliche I know) and decided I had to write her story. Then I found out I wasn’t all that good at writing - so I wrote a short story to practice. That was also terrible. So I wrote another one, finished the book, edited it, wrote another story. Somewhere along the...

Re: What do you do with stories when you can't find a suitable market?

When my stories have made the rounds of all the suitable markets, I just save them. If a suitable anthology comes up, I want to have them available. Since I'm still a very new writer, though, I don't have many! Some of my very early stories, the ones I cringe to think I sent to places like F&SF,...

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36

Congratulations to all those who placed! For those who did not - don't base your whole value as a writer on the results of this contest. This is a market like any other, and your results are the judgment of one, maybe two, people. Don't base the entire value of your story, or your ability, on their ...
