Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Happy Thanksgiving, US friends. I wrote 3k on my NaNoWriMo novel today and broke 40k on the story. I hope your day is as productive!

Re: Retellings

I think, to be honest, the market was flooded with retellings for a while and they've become a bit... passé. Which is not to say it can't be done, but that it needs to be more than simply retelling it with a modern setting or from another character's perspective; it works best when combined with so...

Re: Retellings

I'd speculate that just about every story is really a retelling of some kind or another. After all, just how many really *new* ideas are there? Think how many vampire stories and ghost stories and elf/goblin/dragon stories there are -- aren't they all really based on the same premise? Yet they're a...

Retellings

Similar to the other recent thread on magical realism, I have a question about retellings. I have an idea of a modern retelling of a lesser known work of a very famous author, but that material is all now public domain. As of now, I'm unsure if the story will end up at short story length or longer- ...

Re: Websites (This one's not spam, I swear)

I went through 1&1 and have been relatively happy so far- they host and provided the website design tools I use. My husband did the front end dirty work as he is more computer savvy, but I find it easy enough to work with I don't need his help now that it is established.

Re: The Empathy Problem

Great post. I often think back to Acquisition, the winner of the Golden Pen award from last year. There were two characters, three I suppose, and no "life threatening" peril, not really, for the MC but it is one of the more intense stories I've ever read. I think the reason why is because ...

Re: Form vs Personal Rejection

That second one sounds like a higher tier form rejection to me. There's a rejection wiki if you google it- most of the form responses were on there. On the two personals I've gotten, it was obvious it was a personal rejection. In the first, because the editor explicitly stated so and in the second b...

Re: Go for the novel? Or stick with the short story?

I had this idea for a novel, so I started writing in January. I wrote 40k words or something like that and then realized I had no idea what I was doing. The more I read blogs and articles on writing, the more I ran into concepts that I didn't really understand. Character arc? Setting? Rising action?...

I started writing because I had a story in my head, and, I've always wanted to be a writer. I kept writing because I discovered that I love the process- from creating to critiquing. Except query letters. That sucked. I agree with DisgruntledPeony. That question is a no-win. I'd settle for my stories...

I started querying agents for my novel this week and this tip was just what I needed to hear. As well as encouraging me, it prompted me to thank everyone around here who has offered a friendly helping hand as I begin to navigate the swamp.
