Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

I'm always available for critiques or beta-reads. I can do an in-depth feedback with my thoughts on the piece, or I can read it once (like DF and most readers) and give you my impressions from that one read-through. My Q4 is a challenge for me- I am happy with it, which isn't usual for me at this st...

Re: All countdown stories

I did a writing prompt on reddit the other day and when I got to the end of the scene I'd come up with, I realized I had no idea how to end it satisfactorily. Endings are, for me anyway, the hardest part of the stories I write. They are the element that changes over and over again, getting rewritten...

Twitchomancy also includes prior quarter results, and last year Q3 results came out Sept 1. Write your next! It’s the only cure for twitching.

Re: All countdown stories

Orbivillein, Amos, & YM. Thanks for the discussion. I do agree the blogger had a political angle as subtext (and more) that colored the post. I did find it interesting that they shared my observation that a number of stories just seem to end, instead of concluding. When I write a story, I try to...

All countdown stories

I’ve mentioned this precise phenomenon to a few writing friends recently based on stories I read in the pro magazines. Curious to hear your thoughts.

I really enjoyed Scene and Sequel by Jack Bickham and On Writing by Steven King. I also listen to a number of writing podcasts that help me think about my writing in different ways.

Re: Where do you get your inspiration?

My stories come from collisions of ideas. I usually picture a character, with some background ideas, and they sit in an empty room until another idea joins the space, a setting or a conflict that interests me. I bring them together to write my stories. The Writing Excuses podcast discussed a similar...

Thanks to all. Kent, I appreciate the article. I suspect the opening is where I failed most. Maybe I need to cut that opening scene entirely, and just imply the information provided there to get to the meat of the story quicker.

Rejection

Hi folks. I am hoping to get some fresh eyes on my Q2 rejection. I didn’t take the rejection well and every time I open the document I want to delete every other word. Before I send it out on sub I’d really like some feedback about why maybe it didn’t work. I really believe in this story and want it...

Re: Do you resubmit?

For me personally I always start fresh (so far, I don't have Preston's impressive history of submissions though) because I always have "the next one" swimming around in my mind while I'm working on the current one. I know several people have resubmitted HMs and Rs, with varying results.

A story of mine is being held for consideration by a magazine (Yay!) Probably a silly question but do I reply to the email or just sit and wait for further instruction? Thanks.

It can be either. Recommend getting ahold of the recent years anthologies- they give the best sense of what the judges look for.
