Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

For what it’s worth, you can always email Joni and ask for the status of your story. She’s very friendly and replies quickly. Don’t pester her, obviously, but a short polite email has worked before.

PM me. I’m no expert but I’ve entered five quarters in a row. If I don’t know the answer I can probably point you to someone who does.

Great read. Thanks for sharing. Now if only I could identify which of those eight I’m failing on so I can work to improve that specifically!

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

When inspiration strikes we know that this one is the winner. We lay our fingers on the keys; Some expert, some beginner. We sweat and strive and type and cry to exorcise our thoughts. We love and hate our characters as we tie them up in knots Then we make a pass for conflict, Then a pass for settin...

Re: Magic in the 4th

Always down to work with people, although I’m still deciding between a fantasy or a science fiction for my Q4 so I might be out. Question: when does the log line need to be ready? I’ve only got the vaguest conception of a plot for my Q4 (and I may go with the other one anyway). Is that a pre-requisi...

Re: Contest Questions

1. Response times vary, you can browse old threads to get an idea. Q1 results will probably be out before the end of April. For Q2 I believe I heard in May last year. Maybe June? Just checked it was July 9, in the second wave because I submitted on paper. Long waits! 2. Semi finalists get feedback. ...

Subbed Christmas Eve. Hoping this coming week is our Thursday because I am working on my Q3 and I really don’t know what it would do to my brain to have three pending stories from the contest.

Honorable Mention received Monday April 16.

Re: How Short Is Too Short?

The contest (and most/all other markets) goes by word count not page number or other measures of length. I saw a thread recently where Dave Farland said he goes by word processor word count as well. 17k or under. Good luck!

Another question; this time about story inspiration and focus

I'll try to be succinct, but I'm thinking with my fingertips to an extent here so grant me patience wotf001 Quite often, I'll have an inspiration for a story, an "idea". Well, these are always perfect and exciting. Naturally, once I start writing the darn thing, it's not so perfect anymore...

Above and elsewhere it’s been discussed that an HM is essentially a rejection, though, and that putting it in a cover letter is not recommended.

Re: What's a Silver Honorable Mention as opposed to a regular HM?

Makes sense. Would you only use it for that story specifically or would you put it in all your letters? ie "My story, X, was a finalist for Writers of the Future." I would guess not, because it isn't a publishing credit?

Re: Personal Rejections & Subsequent Submissions

Thanks, that was kind of my thinking. Thanks for the point that the story that matters is the one you're submitting, not any you've written in the past. It's just nice when they give feedback and say, "I hope you'll try us again," and for some reason I was thinking I should respond to that...

Personal Rejections & Subsequent Submissions

I've gotten personal rejections from a few places, but I'm still chasing that first sale. When I submit a story to a publication I've gotten a personal from in the past, should I change my cover letter at all? Or do you just trust that when they said they wanted you to try again, they'll remember? T...
