Swaps

I know I read for a number of you for Q3 without sending anything. Instead of emailing everyone individually, I'm just asking here if anyone has time to read a story for me and poke giant holes in it with your virtual swords. It's my Q3 rejection. PM me if anyone is willing and able to help me out. ...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

I got my second personal rejection from F&SF this morning. It's nice that I'm getting closer, but as I near 50 rejections for 2018 (I know, still a n00b) the hamster wheel is starting to feel more like a treadmill every day. So close, but close don't cut it. wotf017 Onwards!

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 35

Well, I threw my hail mary. Baby girl came early Monday morning. I may or may not have written a few scenes in the hospital ;) but I finished editing a few minutes ago. I just sent the finished story in. I may have missed something stupid, I had no time for exchanges, BUT I FINISHED and 4/4 feels g...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I may miss Q1. I'm working hard on a novel I hope to have ready to query by next summer's conference season, and that's quite a deadline. I might send in one of my shorts that hasn't gone to WotF, but I doubt I'll write something new. I'm also terribly behind on my reading stack. Never enough hours ...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

The only cure for twitching is more twitching. Submit enough stories to enough markers, you stop investing so much emotional energy in the individual submission.

Cure might be an exaggeration - more like a bandaid.

Re: Contest First Reader - Kary English!

Morgan, there was a thread on twitter about this a while ago - my understanding is that on some mobile readers, if you convert the file for reading on a kindle or a nook for instance, sometimes the file info becomes visible as part of file names or some such. On a desktop this wouldn't be an issue, ...

I'm in and did a new story for each quarter in v. 35. Feels good man. Thanks for the challenge, I'm generating stories much more confidently than I did a year ago.

I'm in for the quarter, making it the seventh quarter I've submitted consecutively and success for FOUR IN THIRTY-FIVE wotf024

I'm still open to swaps though, up to the end of the quarter. Then I'm going to really dig into my newest novel and be in a different headspace for a while.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

Is it considered a peep simply because the contest was mentioned?
Also that felt like an admonishment specifically to me about my story. I might be paranoid.

Yeah, I just mean my story resembles a setting and a premise of a recent film. I can’t get any more specific because the contest is anonymous.

Unintentional Relevance

So, I unintentionally wrote a story this week that shares a thematic resemblance to a big movie. I don't watch TV or go to the movies much, so I had no idea this movie was coming out or even existed. wotf020 Should I trunk my story for 6 months or submit anyway? (I'm not sure this is my Q4 sub, but ...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

I'm always available for critiques or beta-reads. I can do an in-depth feedback with my thoughts on the piece, or I can read it once (like DF and most readers) and give you my impressions from that one read-through. My Q4 is a challenge for me- I am happy with it, which isn't usual for me at this st...

Re: All countdown stories

I did a writing prompt on reddit the other day and when I got to the end of the scene I'd come up with, I realized I had no idea how to end it satisfactorily. Endings are, for me anyway, the hardest part of the stories I write. They are the element that changes over and over again, getting rewritten...

Re: All countdown stories

Orbivillein, Amos, & YM. Thanks for the discussion. I do agree the blogger had a political angle as subtext (and more) that colored the post. I did find it interesting that they shared my observation that a number of stories just seem to end, instead of concluding. When I write a story, I try to...
