Re: V34 Q1 Analysis and Discussion

It's taken a long time for me to get past HM. It's one thing to hear about the items to work on. It's another to recognize it in a different story, or have it pointed out in yours. I think Amy definitely got the best deal out of her project. :) You discovered the truth of the situation. wotf001 It ...

Re: V34 Q1 Analysis and Discussion

Many of us have been published, not just enough to knock us out of the competition. We learn form each other too. Oh, I totally agree with that. I just think it's better to learn from people who have some "credentials" (e.g. some decent contest results, other publications, etc.). Yeah, I ...

Re: V34 Q1 Analysis and Discussion

While scouring The Story Doctor website, which features many of Dave's writing tips, I came across an interesting checklist Dave composed that he used to use. Here's a link: https://mystorydoctor.com/12588-2/ . Talk about extensive. I started reading not realizing how in-depth it was and finished wi...

Re: V34 Q1 Analysis and Discussion

If someone is really looking for advice, they should read Dave's Daily Kicks. He's the coordinating judge, and he gives writers all the advice they need. Generally, I think writing advice from novices can steer one rapidly down any number of rabbit holes. But if we're giving out novice advice, here...

V34 Q1 Analysis and Discussion

Hey, folks! Some of you might be aware that I requested to read people's Q1 stories. I had about a dozen sent my way with varying results from Q1. I'd need a much larger sample to hang my hat on what I learned, but it was still a good experience. Here's my overall conclusions. Disclaimer: This is me...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

I am going to celebrate for just a moment because after a year of submitting - so 4 quarters - I finally survived the "first pass." It's a small step, but it says 'progress' regardless. So, yay! Party in Texas! wotf022

Re: Wanting to Do Well But Not Win...?

What everyone's said makes sense. I don't have much experience in the business of publishing, but I"m assuming being professionally published says a lot to editors about my ability. Then they can judge if that ability extends to their niche by reading the submission. For some reason I was think...

Wanting to Do Well But Not Win...?

I'm having an identity crisis this quarter. I've submitted my piece for Q3, and I think it has a good chance of going far, but I actually don't want it to place. My reasoning is that the style I wrote it in is not the style I want people to associate me with. There's nothing wrong with it -- just st...

Re: critters.org Manuscript Notifications

Just an FYI. I've got a story in the Critters cue this week (until the 24th) for any critters out there. My first attempt at a light fantasy short story. Look for me name: Amy Henrie Gillett. ;)

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q2 - Volume 34

I'm finding it so hard to write this quarter! I've been experimenting with short short stories (usually mine are 10,000 plus words) and fantasy this quarter, which I've never tried before. Consequently, I've had two stories get ripped apart on Critters. So...yeah, not feeling great about my writing....

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 34

I think I've finally decided on what story to send it. Now I just need to finish the meat of the climax (trying to brain storm some new cool twist for the magic system that will wow readers--yeah, brain having a hard time with that one so I skipped it and wrote the end of the climax instead. Well, a...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 34

Hey, folks! I've had two people take up my offer to read and critique their Q1 submissions: hlreinhold and kentagions. (Hope y'all don't mind that I just used you as personal references in this post. ;D) Both read-throughs were enjoyable and helpful to me. Hopefully it was helpful to them too! I wou...

Re: What's Your Short Story Writing Process?

Up until a few months ago, I always thought I was an outline writer. You know, plan the beginning, middle, end -- double check themes, conflict, and character story arch. sub-headings. sub-headings of sub-headings. Bullet points. Looked something like this: 1. instigating conflict A. main character ...

Very interesting thread. Thought I'd throw in a writing exercise just to round it off. ;) Pick two character tropes you want to attach characters to. Pick a random topic for these two characters to discuss. Write a conversation between the two characters that is purely dialogue - no tags and no desc...

I was introduced to WOTF March of last year so I've spent the last year making drastic changes to my writing technique and learning new techniques. I've dabbled in writing for a long time and took a Creative Writing course in college, but the last year has made quite a difference. Some of things I'v...
